Tip your taxidermist?

I'm picking up a couple of ducks from my taxidermist tomorrow and don't know if I'll be expected to tip him. Do any of you hunters who use a taxidermist tip? This is my first time to use a taxidermist.

That is not a problem I've faced.

Re: Tip your taxidermist?

I would if he did a great job in a timely manner and is friendly. He may remember it next time you want something done and cut you a good deal.

Re: Tip your taxidermist?

I've only used a taxidermist once (8 pt. white tail) and did not tip him...now I'm wondering if I should have. I will say the 16 month wait makes me think I did the right thing .

Re: Tip your taxidermist?

I've spent a bunch on taxidermy. I've never tipped nor was it expected. If he did a good job, then tell him you use him again and recommend him to your friends.

The good ones charge enough anyway...

Re: Tip your taxidermist?

I had a largemouth bass mounted once in a timely manner, plus it was a beautiful mount, so he got tipped a little bit. Not a lot, but enough to show that I really appreciated it.
Another time I had two largemouth stuffed on one mount and the guy took forever. He kept telling me he was searching for that perfect piece of driftwood, when he was actually using it for display in an outdoor show. He didn't get tipped.

I have never had a taxidermist do a good enough job to deserve a tip....

Re: Tip your taxidermist?

I don't think it's expected of you to tip, but if he does a hell of a job and you think he deserves one I'm sure he would appreciate it.

Re: Tip your taxidermist?

The guy is on track for a tip.

1) He charges less than half what other taxidermists charge.
2) I took him my ducks in mid February and they were ready two weeks ago. Very quick turn around for waterfowl from what I've heard.
3) He's kept me updated as progress was made.
4) He was very easy to work with when trying to decide how I wanted the ducks mounted.

For these reasons alone, I figure he deserves a tip. If my birds are as nice as the finished mounts he showed me, he'll get a pretty nice tip.

Based on the above, if the mounts look good, a tip would be nice. IMHO though, if he is the owner you certainly don't have to go crazy. If not, than I would personally be a bit more generous.

Re: Tip your taxidermist?

I always tip for good work. Asking him for business cards to hand out to others is also a way to show appreciation (if you truly are satisfied).
