Re: Calling all Club Stogie Fishermen!

I hear Toledo Bend is awesome, and it is not too far from me. I just don't have the time I used to. I fished like crazy when I was a kid. Used to carve my own lures, carved and tied my own poppers and flies (none of which were too good). Kenny mentioned lake Amistad (Del Rio, TX), and my brother was stationed down there at the local AFB. I never got the chance to fish it but I hear it is awesome.

If you really get bit, you might think about an Alaska trip sometime in the future. I think the catch limits are low for out of staters on salmon, but Halibut is my favorite eating fish (and Cobia) and there are plenty to be caught up there.

I miss it!!

Tip: fish with a good fisherman, they know all the good places and give you great bait all for a lousy cigar!

I agree with you about Toledo bend.. I will go there more than anywhere else...

Alaska is a big dream for me at this point. I am trying to talk my father into flying us out there next year.. That would be awesome..

If you ever go to Amistad it would become your favorite. Beautiful big lake set in canyons and the water is crystal clear. The bass fishing is great, but when the stripers are running look out, I believe the TX record is still from there, 70+ pounds. Another you might want to try is Falcon, both of these are pretty far from you, but worth it.

Get a boat already.....Im ready to go

Re: Calling all Club Stogie Fishermen!

I fish both fly and standard tackle....

FLY:

I fish for mostly steelhead .... No advice there...I just do whatever Steelheaderdu (John) says to do.

Standard tackle:

Catfish-Chicken liver on a big hook with a slip sinker
Rainbow Trout- if stocked in a small lake power bait (chartreuse) a foot or so from the bottom on the smallest hooks they make..the little gold ones.
Walleye-I'm a troller...Throw on a silver and black rapala like lure and ride it slow all day.
Northern pike-3 in shiner harnessed about a 2 feet from the bottom...and wait.
Muskellunge-Same as walleye but wait even longer
Steelhead-in the lake use a Big size "little Cleo" spoon, or simple the power bait (chartreuse) way.
Crappie-I use minnows 1 to 1.5 inchers
Bass-I wish I fished for bass more, but when I do I use a plastic tube like lure with a good size hook up in it...the tubes with the skirt...Or a "Jitterbug" on top of the water in the morning and evening hours

I'm sure I fish for other species but at the moment I'm drawing a blank....

So this is what I do....

PM me any time about fishing stuff, or other.
