Calling all Club Stogie Fishermen!

Hello all! I am bored and sleepless this evening so I thought I would start a fishing thread. Up until about 2 months ago I hadn't fished since I was about 12 years old, my father took me from time to time, but I was always too damn hyper to calm down and enjoy myself. Fast forward to two months ago and I have realized how much I have missed out on! My buddy took me to Toledo Bend in Louisiana and my GOD am I addicted now. I don't have any pics yet, but how about sharing some of your "whopper" pics (it didn't happen unless there were pics) After that fantastic day on Toledo bend I went directly to Bass Pro Shop and probably overpaid for my first rod/reel setup EVER! I had some crappy stuff as a kid, but this is my first, true setup. All I have fished for so far is Bass, so I am sure I have a whole world in front of me.

So, where do you guys like to fish? What do you use (rod/reel)? Any pics? Any Tips for a beginner? I look forward to seeing what you all post!

Now the hard part, learning to cast and reel in while I am smoking my stogies

Re: Calling all Club Stogie Fishermen!

You thought Cigars was an expensive hobby? Bass fishing is way worse lol
I fished tournaments for 20+ years and guided for 5 and its very expensive but a hell of alot of fun. TX has alot of lakes that offer excellent bass fishing, Toledo Bend is one of my favorites, as is Sam Rayburn and Amistad. Not sure how involved you plan on getting into it, but feel free to PM me and I'll answer as many questions as I can

Re: Calling all Club Stogie Fishermen!

I used to fish in local tournaments and fished in one BASS Federation Tournament on the Hudson River in NY years ago. Not so serious anymore - just occasional bank fishing and a once a year smallmouth trip with my dad on the Delaware.

I think theres a pic of a smallmouth I caught last trip in my personal gallery. I also have a 7 1/2 pound largemeouth caught in Lake Assunpink, NJ on the wall.

Re: Calling all Club Stogie Fishermen!

Tons of places to fish here in Ark. I do alot of lake and river fishing. Bass, panfish, catfish, etc. I have recently taken up fly fishing. This is a whole slope in itself. We have a thread devoted to fly fishing if you ever get the hankering to read about it.

Re: Calling all Club Stogie Fishermen!

Ive got a couple of places around my house. I love Bass fishing and not to mention catfish. I use Mitchell reels on lightning rods. Both you can get at walmart and they are the best you can get for the money. I went the other day to a local pond and caught my 10 pounder again. yup I said again....this fish has been caught by me and my friend in the course of 2 years about 8 times and man he keeps getting bigger

Re: Calling all Club Stogie Fishermen!

I use to bass fish a lot. I fished some local tournaments. I mostly used GLoomis rods and Team Daiwa reels. I think I still have 6 or 7 rods in the garage and quite a few reels. I still have my first real reel a Abu Garcia.

With baitcaster reels it takes plenty of work to get used to them but, its great when you learn how to drop in just past that big stump and haul in a big one.

Re: Calling all Club Stogie Fishermen!

I used to fish tournaments, run tournaments, and managed a bass fishing magazine for a while. While I enjoy fishing, I certainly don't enjoy the way the industry has turned out. I'm glad I'm no longer a part of it--now, when I fish, I can kick back with a cigar and a beer and not worry about it

Good thing you had a cigar in your mouth, I would have never known which is which.

By the way, when are you going to make it up here for some fishing?

Re: Calling all Club Stogie Fishermen!

I have always loved fishing, mostly saltwater.

I have about 25 different size rods and maybe 50 reels many of the reels I no longer use. I have some 50 years old like the old Penn surfcaster with the fisherman engraved on the side and some old ocean city reels.

Most of my equipment is penn and shimano.

I leave for Miami on June 9th for some fishing and cigars so wish me some luck.

Man.. When do you want to go! I'll bring the cigars and a boat (when I get one) I'll be sure to bother you with questions! Maybe we should organize a Texas Club Stogie tournament! The winner gets a box of gerbils or something! now THAT is a tournament!

A cigar and a beer seems to be the best way to go

Re: Calling all Club Stogie Fishermen!

Love to fish. go every Saturday morning. In the summer I go for bass. In the winter I go for Crappie here in FL. Wrote a couple of ebooks on How To get Sponsored For Tournaments (thus the user name). Don't fish tournaments anymore however.

Use Kistler LTA (Lighter Than Air) rods and Quantume Reels.

Let me see if I can post an pics.........

Sorry.

Re: Calling all Club Stogie Fishermen!

Fish around mid Missouri and Lake of the Ozarks.

Tip: fish with a good fisherman, they know all the good places and give you great bait all for a lousy cigar!
