Re: Birds and Jet engines

Mmmmmmm, anyone got any BBQ sauce?

On a more serious note, get Rolls Royce Trent engines, excellent service record.

Re: Birds and Jet engines

This has been making the rounds of the aviation forums circuit. Pretty good footage.

Actually, they flew around the circuit and came back in and landed with no problems.

Re: Birds and Jet engines

Its too bad I couldnt tell what type of aircraft they were in - my first guess would be a 777, but the engines dont look big enough. Only the 777 and one of the scairbuses can muster enough thrust on one engine to climb out of takeoff. 20 years ago, that plane wouldnt have made it.

Back when I was in flight school, we were shown videos of GE turbine engine tests. They would mount the engine to a pod, fire it up to full thrust, and fire various birds out of a cannon straight into the turbine! Everything from sparrows to geese to turkeys were fired into those things, and none of them caused the flameout seen in this video - all had a pretty firey streak, but none killed the engine. Makes the video that much more interesting to me.

Was that a flame out or compressor stall? Is there a difference? I thought compressor stall the engine was still providing thrust but with the "backfire".

Flame outs are frequently caused by compressor stalls...it's just when internal combustion stops. Compressor stalls are caused by an abnormal air flow through the compression stage of an engine, thus causing the compressor to stall and the engine to lose all power. Between the two, stalls are far more dangerous, because flame outs generally are solved by cycling power and performing an in flight restart. Compressor stalls are more frequently caused by damaged equipment (or occasionally bad air conditions).

That could have been a flame out with secondary ignition effect on the heated volatile vapors, or a faltering compression due to off balance compression forces (aka damaged turbines). Looked to me like there was a missing or off balance compressor blade(s) that was causing pressure fluctuations and thus spurts of low pressure were getting poor ignition and creating flame spurts.
