Sad days ahead

For the last 3 months I have been babysitting my granddaughter and have loved every minute of it. However, her daddy is graduating basic training the beginning of March and they will be moving to Washington. I really don't know what I will do with myself when that day gets here! She has brought so much joy into my life and the thought of only seeing her a couple of times a year has me thoroughly down in the dumps. That's my rant for the day, carry on.

Re: Sad days ahead

Washington State or DC? I understand exactly what you're saying..we have a grandaughter in Florida (whose going to come and stay with us for a couple of weeks the end of May) and a grandson in Oklahoma (that we get to see in the beginning of May) and another grandson in New York. Our grandson in Okla was born in July and we haven't been able to see him yet so it'll be really nice to be able to spoil him for a week. Our grandaughter in Florida is 5 and just a little doll. I miss her terribly. They moved to Fla a year ago. Our grandson in NY is 8 and he's been there for a few years. We drive up to PA and pick him up every now and then. We also have 4 granson's here in VA. What a bunch huh? We had them all here at the house last year and I thought we were going to pull our hair out!!

Re: Sad days ahead

I know what you mean... fortunately both of my grandkids are close with one and her mother currently living with us now while continuing college... sure enjoy seeing him every day... the other is only an hour away so it's real easy to go see him as well... but my youngest daughter is pregnant and due this summer... unfortunately she and her husband live in North Carolina so I'm afraid that we will not be able to see her child nearly as much as we would like... at least with web cams and such communication is much easier than waiting on letters and photos...

Being apart from family is tough. My best wishes to you. And might I suggest a webcam hookup? My wife's family lives down in Florida so the webcam comes in handy when you want to be able to see a friendly face.

Re: Sad days ahead

I feel your pain, got three grandkids and only have seen them a half dozen times, My daughter sends me video's every once in a while and talking on the phone every so often helps, even though there 2, 3 and 5, it's great to talk to them. My daughter was in the Navy and married a Navy Firefighter and they move every year or two. Hope to go down to Texas soon before they move again.

I think the webcam idea is great. Cheap and easy way to see and hear each other. Also, good excuse for road trips.

to you others, i'm gonna have to look into the "webcam" stuff for myself. we have them at work for our laptop VTCs, and i've used them for that, but not on my own laptop (and i don't own one at home).
would love to see my son right about now, it's been over 2 weeks!!! half the world away, i can't be there for him if he needed me.

Sorry to hear about that. Family is definitely something never to take for granted, and I'm sure your daughter/son in law have been thankful for your babysitting skills/abilities. Family is very important for both my wife and I and although we don't have kids yet, I know any opportunity that my/her parents can help us out by babysitting would be extremely helpful. Good luck to you.

Re: Sad days ahead

I know what your saying. I had to take a "personal day" away from my real job today. The wife is traveling and 1 of our 3 year old twins had a 103.5 fever last night. That means both stay home from day care today. Daddy has his hands full, but would not miss it for the world.

Re: Sad days ahead

As a person on the other side of the coin i send my regards. We have been far from family in all parts of the country and world (spent the last eight years overseas). The experience for my children has been great and they are well adjusted. However; it comes at a cost to the entire family we miss them and they miss us. I have few regrets but the ones I have a centered around this fact. Please do not give your son a hard time about it. He is doing the best he can for your grandaughter. His job is to bring up that little angel into a beautiful women.

The Web cam is a wonderful tool for us. Take care of yourself.

You are only about 2-3 days away by car, only driving 6-8 hours a day. All our family vacations have been road trips with the kids in the van.

I wouldn't dream of giving him a hard time about it. After all, it is in service to our country that takes him to Fort Lewis, Washington. I'm very proud of him.
