Best cure for severe back pain?

Its definitly muscle pain in the lower middle back. I started getting it toward the end of my vacation to Greece, and now its just really bad. I'm thinking about calling a doctor or chiropractor, but if anyone knows an easier less expensive way to cure this im all ears. Ive tried the icy hot patches and Bengay but to no avail. Ibuprofen wont work either, my girlfriend tried massaging it but it always comes back. Any suggestions?

Call a chiropractor first, and then get a professional massage if it's ok. Gotta take care of your back. Hope it gets better for you.

Vicodin works well .

Perco-set works good as well.

However if you are that hurt, you realy should go see your doctor for advise.

Chiropractor, once they have performed an adjustment on you, the tendancy leans towards you will have to keep going back for adjustemts. Try physio, or if you're asking about drugs, Robaxacet.

Unless you want to be tethered to pharmaceuticals the rest of your life, exercise is the ONLY long term answer.

Get physical therapy, and make the exercises a part of your life.

I am probably in the best shape of my life, I can run a 7 minute mile, and bench 60 pounds over my own body weight. I exercise at least 4 times a week, this back pain is definitly only temporary but severely debilitating none the less. Just looking for some suggestions not life time adjustments. I am 21 and about 180 pounds.

I would start with a chiropractor. They are much cheaper than MD's in most cases, and they will not give you drugs. Professional massage is also a great idea. If these don't work, then maybe a MD would be a good idea. Also, I'm sure you already do this, drinks LOTS of water!!!!

Good luck. I hope you feel better soon.

Re: Best cure for severe back pain?

I would personally go to the MD first and get an xray or possibly MRI to make sure there is no severe damage (disc, etc.).

Then make a decision from there.

Some good reading would be "Healing Back Pain" by Dr. John Sarno.

Just to keep readers on the right track.

A good chiropractor will send you to an MD first. They should be used as a team. From my experience, a chiropractor is not a licensed MD. please correct if I am wrong.

Re: Best cure for severe back pain?

Understand that you are in great shape. I was experiencing lower back pains a while back and thought that I was in great shape also. Running, weight lifting, hiking and other stuff.

Then I started working my core muscles. After a few weeks, core was stronger, posture improved and pain went away.

See the docs first by all means, but consider working the core muscle groups as well.

Re: Best cure for severe back pain?

Naprosyn based pain relievers also have anti-inflammatory properties in case that is a part of the problem. I would try that over Ibuprofen, but a visit to the doctor is definitely warranted here.

I'm sorry, your thread title said "severe".

Since it's temporary, take four advil and rest it.

Most back pain goes away on it's own, you could just tough it out.

I always thought my pain was muscular but turned out to be much worse and required surgery. Don't screw around with this, get it looked at to cover your bases. You never know.

Also, Aleve(naproxen) is much better than the ibuprofen. Like Tom said, it's all about the anti-inflammatory.
