Who has had there deviated septum fixed

I have been told a few times by me ear nose and throat doctor that I need to have my deviated septum fixed. Who has had it done and did it help your sinus problems? I have heard that this is not fun, and have put it off for years.

I had it done about 10 years back and didn't find it to be a big deal as far as healing goes, but it didn't fix my sinus or snoring problems. Just ask my former platoons on TAD. Shoes flying across the room didn't help either...

Turbinoplasty didn't help either, so if they suggest that, be leary.

Re: Who has had there deviated septum fixed

Had it fixed last month to be honest. I did not have sinus problems, more of an obstructive than anything.

The surgery itself was not that bad to me. No packing was used (blessing in itself)....some kinda surgiseal stuff that came out on its own. I took a few days off work.....4 I think. My biggest complaint was the amount of #$%@ I kept blowing out of my nose. I think the heat and lack of rain did not help it either...plus the smoke from GA fires. But now....wow being able to move air on both side of nose is awesome !!!!

Biggest advice........

have the surgery, take it easy, get a good humidifier, saline nose spray, and wait about 3 weeks before you smoke (that 1st one is a wild ride)

Hope it helps......if you need anything esle just let me know

Re: Who has had there deviated septum fixed

I had it over 10 years ago. It helped with my problem a lot, but was not the cure I wanted. I don't have the severe headaches, but still have a lot of infections. Now I'm trying to decide if I should have the roto rooter surgery that the ent says I need.

Re: Who has had there deviated septum fixed

Had that worked on a couple years ago. Had rhinoplasty and turbinoplasty. Sucked....sucked bad, but I could barely breathe through my nose before. Now I have one side clear.

Funny thing is, doc said he's never had a case where the patient ended up with a hole in the septum (leaving an opening between the 2 nasal passages). Well I was his first, yay me!!

Let me tell you, that sucks because you get build up of...well mucus in and around that hole and it gets crusted.

I still snore like CRAZY loud too, ask the wife

Only 2? Leave it alone then, cause you're lucky.

Well I usually just get 2, but this year I have already had 4. Plus I can't hardly breathe out of one side.

Re: Who has had there deviated septum fixed

I have a devious septum, is that the same?

Seriously though, I've known a handful of people who have gotten the surgery but it didn't "cure" the problem. Just helped slightly to moderate.

Re: Who has had there deviated septum fixed

I had the roto router surgery about 9-10 years ago. Worked for me. I had become a walking sinus infection - in addition to severe sleep apnea. All better now, zero sinus infections since then - worse thing was the packing which I proceeded to remove as soon as I got home - which caused excessive bleeding which I viewed as 10 times better than the damn packing.

Re: Who has had there deviated septum fixed

I had it done back in Feb time-frame earlier this year along with scarring of my soft tissue at the back of my throat to assist in stopping my snoring. I was the best operation I ever did. I cannot believe I waited this long. I highly recommend it. Cheers

Re: Who has had there deviated septum fixed

Not only had it done once but had the pleasure of returning a year later for another.
Actually, first surgery was to remove a massive nasal tumor and although they tried reconstructing the nose, ended up deviated so had to return.
Second time around much easier as didn't involve literally removing my nose to access a tumor.
Anything to the face is quite messy in terms of bruising and swelling. However, I hear today the procedure is done in a dr's office and the swelling is now to a minimum. Worse that will happen is you will look like a tough guy who just got his ass handed to him by Mike Tyson. The end result is well worth it. You will be shocked by how much easier you breathe.
Go for it!!!

As far as being much easier to breathe that would be an understatement

Re: Who has had there deviated septum fixed

Mine was severly deviated and is reminder of what you get with socialized medicine. ( US Military, I'm retired Navy.) The military healthcare did great for 99% of what I needed which is to be expected when almost everyone is under 40 years of age. They just don't go looking for trouble. But then again, my family doctor before I joined the Navy never mentioned a deivated septum.

After retiring I began using the "regular" healthcare system and the benefits that came with my first job. On one of my first visits to the concerned hypertension. However, I was just getting over a case of flu. He examined my nasal passage and commented, you have a deviated septum, don't you have problems breathing through your nose? I told him I'd had that problem all my life so thought it was "normal".

He sent the to a specialist and I had my first surgery shortly thereafter. Nothing notable to report other than when she pulled the packing out I felt it was part of a clown gag. The packing just kept on coming, and coming out. About a year later I mentioned to my doc that it was a lot better but I felt it was still slightly obstructed. So, that was my second surgery. That got it almost right and about 2 years after my first surgery, I had my third and final surgery. That one completely corrected the problem. So, for the past several years I've actually been able to take a deep breath through my nose. Its made quite a difference in cold weather or when exercising, jogging or biking.

So, I thought it was no big deal. No infections or any other problems.

When I think back on it I comment to the wife that "I didn't use to smell to good." She always agrees.
