Turned life around in 6 weeks...............

Aside from pride of what I have accomplished, this post is mainly to illustrate that it can be done and if you are in a similar bind, just get hopping and get it done.

Some may recall my post from about 6 weeks ago or slightly more where I got some really bad news from my cardiologist. Wasn't will I have a heart attack or when will I have one but more like why was I still walking.

My combined cholesterol was at 306 with my HDL very low. My ratio was somewhere around 5.0 which is not good at all. I was bordering on sugar problems with a rather high glucose and my blood pressure was not being controlled properly by my meds.

I decided to do all I could do to change it - no holds barred.
Started a new way of eating, seeking healthier foods and more vegetables.
Lunches now consist of the very many different ways I can creatively eat turkey.
Started regular cardio exercise, even while on the road.
Started taking all my meds regularly - blood pressure and two for cholesterol.
Started daily Pomegranate juice.
Started daily Omega 3 Fish Oil pills.

Just had an insurance company comprehensive blood analysis done 2 weeks ago or so due to changes in my life insurance policies and it is truly amazing what I accomplished just four to five weeks post having visited the dr.
My cholesterol is now at 180.
My HDL is at 63
The ratio is now 2.8 - STELLAR!!!
My BP is steady at 118 over 78
I lost 7 pounds and lost one size on my belt/waist - I never had a weight problem but could have stood to lose that off the waist to help my herniated discs feel better.
My glucose is steady at 91

It can be done!!!

Re: Turned life around in 6 weeks...............

That's very encouraging, way to go!

My cholesterol was ~260 a couple of years ago and I haven't gone back to have it re-checked yet. I cut down on the saturated fats and trans fats, started sipping red wine, using olive oil instead of butter whenever I can, baked chips instead of the regular ones, I eat a lot more fruit and other high-fiber foods, etc. I'm working out whenever I can, which helps both mentally and physically.

Now that you've shared your success story, maybe I'll be inspired to have mine checked. I know, I should have done it a long time ago.

Re: Turned life around in 6 weeks...............

P.S.
The one thing I would like to add is that this was accomplished by not having to stop living. I have not become a saint overnight. I have not gone to the other extreme. I just modified my lifestyle to that of a healthier one who wants to be around a bit longer while still enjoying all life has to offer as much as possible.

I still eat well - just more selective of what it is I do eat.
I still enjoy my cocktails and my red wine - will never give that up.
I think aside from a regular excercise regimen and taking my meds consistently, the rest is really left up to a key word.............."moderation".

PROPS TO YOU
for doing what some consider the hardest thing....changing eating habits.

You hit it on the head.
The KEY to being healthy.....MODERATION

Re: Turned life around in 6 weeks...............

Congratulations!

That is an incredible turn around, especially knocking a buck and a quarter off your cholesterol in only 6 weeks. I've been putting this off for a while, but after reading this, I'm going to have some blood work done when Kim and I get to wherever her next assignment is.
