RE: robmcd

I've been advised to try it.
Went to the website and saw the bottle, thats when it hit me that I'd seen this before. Did you know the blue label comes in a 51 oz. magnum? They say the bigger bottle ages different from the smaller bottles. Thus a better brew. They say, age the magnum in the dark for several years or something like that. Anyway, I asked my beer store to get some 3 weeks ago. No luck.

RE: robmcd

I have bought a bottle of the Magnum, but I have yet to open it. The bottle is marked as a '99 vintage. The bottle is supposed age better due to it being darker than the 750 ml and small bottles... less succeptible(sp?) to sunlight. I'll probably stock up on some more bottles before I crack the one I have. I'll let you know how it taste when I do :9 The owner of a local brew house here also loves Chimay. He said he once visited a bar which was selling the 750 ml bottles for only 7 bucks. They said the price was so low because it wasn't moving. He said the bottle ended up being from the 80's and was superb.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON Jan-26-03 AT 04:02 AM (CDT)]It is a Belgian ale produce by Trappist Monks. It isn't sold in many states since the alcohol by volume content is above 6%. You can read more about it at www.chimay.com

RE: robmcd

i sampled a lot of different belgian beers last summer... for the most part i didn't like them because they seemed flavored somehow- not at all like german beers, which are pure and refreshing. the best i had was at a monastery/microbrewery where we just got a plate of bread and cheese and sampled the various beers they produced. anyway- they don't mass produce.

my first taste of chimay came when we were at the university in louvain... we were in a student bar and the waiter pegged me for an american right away... he suggested i try chimay blue- americans like kick-ass beer sort of thing. i looked around and nobody else was drinking chimay. it was the best of the mass produced belgian beers i tried- but i think it tastes 'flavored' also... and i don't think it warrants a premium price. it sort of reminds me of the 'coors days' when visitors from the east would come to LA and stock up on coors just because they couldn't get it.

RE: robmcd

Well, thats good to know. Now if I find some I'll just buy 1 bottle to try before I get a truckload. Really though, 2 beers is the most I can drink. I get a headache just thinking about 3 or 4.

RE: robmcd

Chimay is good. I had a friend that lived in Belgium for 18yrs.
Now when ever he comes over he always brings Chimay.
