DIY Car Detailing

Does anyone here enjoy doing their own car detailing?

I have just recently got back into doing my own detailing after buying my new car. In the past I have had a company car and never bothered to do it myself.

I have found some great products that give my car a showroom shine.

It might sound like I am just endorsing Mequires. Honestly I am so impressed with their products I have to recommend them.

Turtle Wax Ice Car Wash working great for washing the car. It smells nice too.

Meguires Scratch X works great for removing water spots, swirls and light scratches

Follow up the Scratch x with Meguires Clearcoat Gold Class paste wax

In between washing you can use some Meguires Ultimate Quick Detailer

Re: DIY Car Detailing

now as much as i would love to see a redskins gan use cheap store bought crap on his care, i have to give you better advice.

DO NOT use ANY of that stuff! I cannot be any more clear! That stuff will strip the clear coat off the paint, and will eventually strip the paint.. There is no way i can get you to understand the difference over the computer, but please take a trip to philly and i will show you the difference.. here is where you should buy ALL of your care care stuff!

www.griotsgarage.com

any questions, problems, doubts, anything.. pm me.. ill give you my #.

STOP buying this stuff, please trust me!

Interesting. I will have to take a look at your link. The Meguiares products were recommended to me by a professional detailer. He comes by where my wife works once and week and details cars for the company employees while they are at work. I saw him out in the parking lot a few weeks ago and I told him I was going to use some Turtle Wax products on my new car and he said the same thing about TW that you said about Meguiars but he highly recommended Meguiars.

Right now my car looks like it has a showroom finish and the rain beaded up real nice last night.

Re: DIY Car Detailing

You can use Meguiares - but it's second rate.

The best stuff out there imho is Zaino Brothers (Click Here) Bar none this is the best and easiest I have ever used. Results are simply amazing.

You can call (or email) Sal directly - just don't call his products "wax". He will give you tons of great advice on exactly what products to use and how.

And just a tip - don't apply anything until you clay the car first. There is a ton of buildup on your brand new car from shipping, rail dust etc. You might as well start out correctly since it's new.

In addition to Zaino's and the mentioned Griots - I also get advice and parts (applicators, etc) from Autopia and AutoGeek.

Ron

I was reading on autopia.org the other day about the Zaino products. I am pretty impressed with Meguires but sounds like there are other products such as Zaino that might surpass Meguires.

I do have some TW Liquid Clay that I was going to try on my car but I had already used the Scratch X product and I didn't want to overdo it.

Not might - but will! Friend of mine has a bright red 40's something hot rod that he brought over one day after he detailed it. And yep Meguires user. I used the Zainos on the top of the toolbox and needless to say - he is a Zainos user today. It was just that impressive.

Just say no to Liquid Clay. Again in my opinion, it's nothing more than rubbing compound. You will want to use a clay bar. Clay bars will remove surface containments with out harming the finish. Takes a few minutes to get used to them but the results are more than worth the effort.

And oh yeah - Zainos may appear to be more expensive at first - but it only takes a very little amount. Believe it or not - but an ounce or so will do your whole car. I have an F350 that I can do with about 2 ounces.

And don't skimp on the 100% cotton towels -

I like both Meguires and Griot's poducts. No experience with Zaino. I also like Autoglym and Shining Monkey. For everyday use nothing beats a Mothers shine. Would you look at that trunk lid.

Re: DIY Car Detailing

Used to always detail my truck myself. Currently managing a detail shop, doing about 100 full details per day. Now I just pay one of the guys $20 bucks a week to do a wash n vac and dress the tires. I buff myself twice a year. As far as products go, the products we use are not for retail sale. But, they are just run of the mill type stuff. We do use some 3m wax/polish 5-step process. Takes some time, but works very well. Nothing better than a clean vehicle!!! Can't stand to ride in other people's cars that are not clean.

Re: DIY Car Detailing

i think what is the general conensus is that the store bought stuff is for the "weekend warrior type"

but the professional stuff, like listed on this thread is the way to go..

anything that can be bought at sotres from pepboys to acme is no good.

my detailer will hit you if you call him a detailer.. his field is Auto Restoration.. he has a 76 mercedes that's paint job rivals that of cars less then 5 years old..

ill show you all when u come to my house.
