Pipe tobacco?
Ok, A friend just gave me a pipe and some tobacco today. So how do you work one of these bad boys? I tried it out tonight and the crazy thing wouldn't stay lighted! He said you need to 'pack' it lightly on the bottom, then 'pack' it a little harder in the middle and then 'pack' it tight up top. How in the world do you pack something like that?
Which tobacco do you like best? The stuff he gave me is scottish blend. |

RE: Pipe tobacco?
well im far from an expert on this, but the way that ive found works best for me is, to put the pipe in the bag with the tobacco, and pack it in with your finger, what i mean by that is just keep pressing it in, and firmly. once its filled, test the draw, if its too tight, dig a little out, if its pretty free, pack some more in. Now the trick to keeping it lit is to periodicly stamp it down when you smoke it. I just use a wooden dowl i have thats cut down, just stamp it down lightly to repack it and draw on it at the same time. with that, you should be able to pack and smoke a complete pipefull. Enjoy!!!! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

RE: Pipe tobacco?
My $.02 on packing, would be, try slightly different packings until one works best for YOU. kjpman's method works for ME, but for others is does not......I find the trick to smoking is in the tamping. Now my Gramps does not tamp at ALL, but we pack the same way. Just practice, practice, practice. Go to your local tobacco shop (or your buddy's stash) and sample different blends until you find one you like. Keep in mind that most people have a different pipe for differnt styles of tobacco. That is where cheap corn cobs may come in handy. ;-)
Be sure not to get your bowl to hot, or take the stem out to clean until it has cooled I like McClellands anniversary tobacco, a few Dunhill's, and Butera's. If all else fails, stick to cigars....... :P OPT |
