Re: Laptop Processor Question
Go with the Centrino and 2 gigs of ram, dual cores are pretty much useless until they actually make programs that utilize the scalable architecture and more ram is almost never a bad thing.

Re: Laptop Processor Question
I am a software developer and typically run a lot of power applications, DB servers, IDE's etc... I already have the ICM 1.73 and it is as slow as crap and now heats up so much I can't even touch it. My only other option is to purchase the other mentioned above. I realize that there are better systems but I only have the one option for various reasons.

Re: Laptop Processor Question
Vista runs better on dual core. Centrino doesn't drain the battery as quickly as dual core. I would use 2gb minimum in any PC I purchased new.

Re: Laptop Processor Question
I have a Centrino Duo and LOVE it!! 4GB of memory and Vista runs like a champ. I do a lot of virtulization on mine and it runs great.
Vista, believe it or not is very good at scaling the amount of memory it uses. While at any given time it can take up a lot, as other programs need it, Vista will release the memory for use by said program. With that said, 2GB is a bare minimum...unless you have 10K drives for the pagefile (don't think there are any 10K drives for laptops though)

Re: Laptop Processor Question
Core Duo all the way. If you have apps that run all the time (live av with real time protection) the duo helps with performance. 2GB mem minimum. I buy 1GB for office workers that do nothing but check email memory is hella cheap right now.
Do you plan on doing any software development on the laptop? If I were buying new I would get the core 2 duo processor. The two main reasons are 4mb L2 cache which is equivilant to about a 20% faster clock(except the three lowest models) and it is a 64bit processor. They have also improved power consumption a bit in this model so it does not consume more power than the 1st gen duo. If you are going to do any 64bit software development this is the way to go. Just my ![]()

Re: Laptop Processor Question
Laptop performance is by far bound the most by I/O (hard disk reads/writes) for most applications. If you really want the best increase in performance in a laptop (and most desktop systems), buy a faster hard drive (I think 7200rpm is the fastest you can get in a laptop drive), but you will have reduced battery life and increased noise and heat.
