They stole my central air and furnace units

[rant] My wife and I own a duplex that we rent out. It went vacant a few weeks ago, so we spent several days fixing up, painting, updating plumbing, electrical service, and doors. Wanted to get it ready to rent before school starts. Long story short, over the weekend, while on vacation, a neighbour calls, says the back door is open, and something seems to have happend to the outside AC unit......

They completely dismantled both outside AC units, and took the enitre line set from outside unit to furnace. They also took the heat exchangers from the funace units inside, along with about 1/3 of the metal inside. WOW.

Unfortuantely, we were not finished working on the units, and they managed to steal almost all of my hand tools and cordless tools.

Met with the police this morning. Metal Recycling apparently ....this is going around. New to me. CRAP!

Holy crap! Thats rediculous. Some people are just damn desperate. Sorry for your loss, thats probably going to be a pain in the butt to replace. My dad rents houses too but I don't think he's ever had a large appliance like that stolen.

They didn't steal the AC unit, they dismantled it for the copper coils. Scrap metal prices are so high that people are stealing the plumbing and wiring from vacant homes. Bronze funerary urns are another popular item, along with aluminum light poles.
It was like this in the early 70's, they would rip the downspouts off of your home while you slept!

damn man, that's just low-we've had a rash of the same in our neck of the woods, siding, copper, ductwork, but the a/c is a new one on me-some crackhead around here blew up a house (& himself) cutting a gas line inside a vacant house thinking it was copper-now ya know why they call it dope!-BTW, the same A**holes might be waitng for you to replace it so they can do it again-may want to put some habanero juice on anything they may touch, or boards w/nails covererd up w/grass by the unit

Re: They stole my central air and furnace units

Back in December, we had some pretty bad wind storms up this way. Knocked out a lot of power in the region, some places didn't get power back for weeks.

Ended up that in some of the more remote places, a few people were actually cutting the downed power lines and phone lines, in order to get the copper out of them. Apparently copper is very much in demand.

Ain't people great?

What you have is a case of the Ice-Heads/Crackheads stealing the metal mainly wiring (copper) so they can go get their daily meth/crack high. Happens alot around here with all the ice/crackheads. They will steal from vacant house or ones under constuction then go sell to Scrap metal companies.

The thing that gets me is they are willing to put all that work into stealing the copper and other metals , but they are too damn lazy to get a real job.

Call these guys they are experienced in handling Ice-heads.
Lolli, lolli, Icehead! Lolli, lolli, Ice-head!

Sorry it happened to you man. Like others said watch it cause they come back again to the same places.

Re: They stole my central air and furnace units

When you get it replaced, protect it with a drop gun. Tis a device that you load a blank shotgun cartridge (saluting blank) into and it is activated by a trip wire, its totally mechanical and will scare the living daylights out of anyone who sets it off. If I had a shotgun license I would get one (need the license to buy ammo in the UK).
