help on ordering my first tins

I'm brand spanking new to pipe smoking. Ordered a briar pipe last week and it should hopefully be here today!

I am going to order a four or five tins from smoking pipes to get me started, any recommendations for a complete pipe beginner. I'm open to anything at this point. I've smoked a handful of bowls at friends' places, but I have no idea what I've tried.

So far Christmas Cheer is the only thing on the list...help me out please!

Re: help on ordering my first tins

There is almost no end to the choices you have, but here are a few to get you going.

1. SG Squadron Leader
2. Rattray's Old Gowrie
3. Peterson Irish Oak
4. Solani Aged Burley Flake
5. McClelland's Christmas Cheer
6.
7.
8.
9.
10.

You could pick up a pouch of Prince Albert or Carter Hall and a cob. (mild mannered over the counter blends.)

Whatever you decide, save the Christmas Cheer for last. With experience, You might avoid the tongue bite and be able to age a quality Va. flake at the same time.

(shrug)

There's as many availible as there are individual tastes to smoke them.

What I would do is check out www.tobaccoreviews.com & get a good idea for some tins that have gotten good ratings there ..... and get a few cobs to try them out with. That way, you are not trying to see if you like Dunhill's 965 out of a briar that's been tainted with MacBarren's Vanilla.

Your question is one of the most difficult to answer, as taste is so subjective. You'll need to try various types of blends to see what you like and don't like. IMHO the Christmas Cheer blends are better appreciated by an experienced smoker.

Anyway, a few suggestions of milder blends within different categories would be the following:

McClelland's Frog Morton - a mild but delicious English Style.
Lane's Rum & Maple - a mild delicious, quality aromatic.
Cornell & Diehl Briar Fox - a great introduction into a va/perique blend
House of Windsor's Country Doctor - a great, mild, Burley Blend.
Royal Jersey's Cavendish & Virginia - a nice introduction into virginia
Dan Tobacco's Sweet Vanilla Honeydew - a great, tasty aromatic
McCraine's Red Ribbon - a great mild straight virginia

Just my thoughts, Johnny

I've read over tobaccoreviews quite a bit...its a great site. I have no frame of reference though so it makes it tough to know which reviews would apply best to my tastes (which I don't have yet). Thats a great idea to pick up some corncobs though...I'll have to get that done this week.

Re: help on ordering my first tins

Thanks for all the suggestions so far, please keep them coming!

Its great that pipe tobacco is a lot cheaper than cigars for me. I'm fortunate also that I have friends who are more than happy to buy leftovers from me.

Re: help on ordering my first tins

Any thoughts on A.C.P. Escudo or CAO Midnight Ride?

BTW, as a cigar smoker, I really enjoy Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 and CAO Black...not sure how or if that translates to pipe tobacco.

another vote for penzance, and while we are on esoterica, pick up some stonehaven, those really got me into pipe smoking.

There are a number of tobaccos here which are considered corner stones of any decent collection. Try some of these out. They may serve as voltmeters for your developing discrimination in taste.

MacBaren's Navy Flake
Peterson's Sherlock Holmes, Delux Mixture
Capstan Flake Navy Cut Mild (yellow) or Medium (Blue)
Rob McConnells Scottish Cake
Solani Gold (English Luxury Mixture)

Everyone sweet and sound blends.

Sherlock Holmes for a beginner is a must. IMHO

My suggestion, also. Will also give you an idea of what each type is all about - Va/Per's, English, Oriental's, etc.

And, if you have IHT type money, you can by two of each and be set!
