Will vinyl pouches affect tobacco?
I recently purchased an auction of pipes, and it came with a new 'tartan' roll-up tobacco pouch (made in China). It's new. Nothing fancy, but it's smell immediately reminded me of the cheap halloween costumes we had when we were kids. You know, that heavy plasticky vinyl smell.
Is it useable or will it ruin my tobacco (akin to using a plastic-smelling coolerdor for storing cigars)? Is there a way to get rid of the odor?

Re: Will vinyl pouches affect tobacco?
Is the inside of the pouch vinyl? I know you can buy vinyl tobacco pouches a lot of places, so I don't necessarily think it would affect the tobacco. Of course all the ones I have seen have a vinyl outside and some sort of plastic inside. Could be wrong though.

Re: Will vinyl pouches affect tobacco?
The real question is can you smoke the pouch full of tobacco fast enough to keep it from drying out? I recommend lining the pouch with a quart size freezer bag which holds the tobacco. It has a seal and will keep the pouch clean. You still get the look of the tobacco pouch too.

Re: Will vinyl pouches affect tobacco?
Yes, it will, lining it with a zip lock bag will overcome the problem. But my method is to throw in some disliked cheap drugstore baccy, then put the wallet in a zip lock bag, throw in more baccy, seal it. Then leave it on the shelf for about 6 months. This is the only way to get rid of the plastic or leather smells in your wallet. It's a hassle and thats why most people just use a ziplock bag liner.

Re: Will vinyl pouches affect tobacco?
Thanks for the ideas.
Will any ziplock bag work? Or do they make a thicker bag intended as a liner for tobacco?

Any will work, in fact it does not really have to be a ziplock, just one that is the right size, that fits snugly into the pouch. I only really use my pouch when I'm on the town, with a suit or jacket on, then I just put in enough for a few bowls and pop it into my chest pocket. When I return home I empty out back into the tin what I didn't smoke. Why? Because it dries out very quickly in a pouch, hence also the use of ziplock bags, and/or, with a moisture button. Hope that helps, I've seen those tartan pouches on the web, they do look really cool, nice and slim, not too bulky. |
