I headed down there and certainly didn't get that impression. I went a few days before they moved, so most of their stuff was packed up (still had a good selection of tobak out though), but my gripe isn't with the selection. I went in around 2 and the place was deserted aside from the two employees (both ~30 years old, a short/stout women and a tallish skinny-faced black haired guy) and they hardly acknowledged me, and came off with a very unfriendly vibe. Maybe it was just the employees that day, but they were particularly unwelcoming (the exact opposite of all other B&Ms I've been to). When I bought a cheapo basket pipe they did offer to polish up the stem for me, which was a nice act, but when I got some 1oz sample bags of their bulk the guy just acknowledged me with some nonverbal grunts, they really came off as obnoxious. It might just be because I'm young, but thats really no excuse for being that unpleasant.

I'm still going to head back there and give them a second chance (any recommendations from their bulk offerings btw?), but as is I was singularly unimpressed.

Which Pipe World did you visit? There are two in Austin, and one in Round Rock.

Ah, didn't realize that. I went to the northcross mall one (2525 west anderson). If the others are better thats great, since B&Ms with substantial pipe-related stuff are fairly rare.

I have not been to the one at Northcross. I know that Gayle, the owner, is almost always at the Round Rock store. And David and Lynn are always very gracious. Next time you're up this way, definitely stop at the RR store in La Frontiera.

I'm with Doyle. The only one I've been to is the one here in RR, and I've been very happy with the place each time I've visited. (If it's any consolation, I'm quite young myself.)

Re: Any pipe Herfs in the Austin area?

I agree the RR Pipe World is a pretty nice B&M and the people I saw there were attentive and curtious. As Drob pointed out during our visit, (and I unfortunatley have to agree,) my old favorite B&M, Heroes and Legacies', pipe section is more of an afterthought these days. I went in there to pick up some tins and hardly any of the employees were knowledgable about pipes in general. They used to have a guru named Pablo, but, since he's been gone, Heroes has gone down hill for pipes.

Definatly get into the Pipe World in Round Rock if you get the chance.

Yeah that much is obvious. If you know what you want from their bulk its fine, but if you expect any help with pipes forget it. The one woman who I've seen there ocasionally is very knowledgeable, but every one else has no clue (might as well leave if she's not there). The tinned section is semi-weak, but I still think their bulk is fine.
