Woah, I think I finally get it....

It's only been a little over a month since I started on the pipe, and mostly delved in the cheap Burleys and aromatics. Ventured out on a whim on a bag of Old Ironsides, which was tasty but somewhat one dimensional....I kept asking myself, "Is this it???".

I got a tin of Penzance the other day. Smoked my first bowl today, while at the gun club running a GSSF match.

Wow.

The complexity of the smoke and flavor was leagues above what I've experienced so far (the Old Ironsides and Old Gowrie). I tasted the latakia of course, but also I'm assuming some of the Virginians shone through. At midbowl I sensed a lot of different citruses....like some exotic hawaiian fruit, or lemongrass. Took nearly two hours to smoke the entire bowl down to the bottom in an estate GBD Midnight large straight billiard.

And my mouth doesn't feel that bad at all.

Congratulations. It sounds like you enjoyed it. I look forward to this day greatly. Perhaps it's a good thing that Penzance is on my shopping list...

Penzance was the first head-turner for me. It reassured me that I was doing something worthwhile afterall.

Smoked my second bowl of Penzance tonight, I only smoke 'english' in the evenings. It is very, very nice, I agree totally, the VA and citrus fruity flavours pop out nicely at mid bowl. It's a good 'un.

Damn ... I'm gonna have to revisit this, I think. I still have a bit left; but I only remember the heavy Latakia and a certain "burning tires" aroma. Hmmmm....

It seems like Penzance is the "great converter" for pipe newbs... I suppose I'll have to order a tin of it.

Many catholic churches burned old tires for incense.

The point is, you have found a tobacco you really like. This is important. But it is not the end...it is just the beginning. enjoy the journey.

not trying to hijack the thread, but does anyone know a baccy that does smell very similar to incense?

Re: Woah, I think I finally get it....

What exactly do you mean by a baccy that smells like incense? - do you mean... in the pouch or when smoked? If you're looking for that special tobak that has a very incense-like feel, then you're looking for Balkan Sobranie with its generous load of Yenidje. I believe, also, that it's the Yenidje in Penzance which produces the incense qualities so commonly attributed to it.
