You may want to do a light reaming first. I found that this helps immensly in removing ghost. I tried the alcohol treatment in a Bang that had a bad latakia ghost. It didn't go away until I reamed it, then used alcohol. This got rid of the ghost and now this little bent apple Bang is a great VA pipe!

I have an estate pipe that was strictly dedicated to Stokkebye Champagne and Georgian Cream. I had no problem removing the ghost by simply smoking my own preference in it until the flavor was gone completely.

As for VAs, I've never had a problem with them burning hot, but I also learned much of my early smoking habits on MacB Plumcake and Scottish Blend. The coolest smoking MacB I've had so far is VA Flake...... no heat whatsoever. Also, I've never noticed a longer stem making much more than a marginal difference when smoking a biter.
