I've for a while been wanting to try out pipe smoking. I was wondering if there were any suggestions for an economical way of starting out ... Appreciate the input

Go grab yourself a corn cob pipe and some Carter Hall or Prince Albert from your local B&M, or some Drug Stores carry that stuff and give it a shot to see if you are gonna like it then go from there.

I'm with all the above. I just recently got started myself, and the cheapest way is a couple corncob pipes and hit your local B&M and get some small samples. SIgn up for the NST for Pipes as well. At the most you'll be out $10-$15 if you decide pipes are not really your thing. There is a ton of great informations in the stickies here that have been put together. See you on the way down!

Go buy two corn cob pipes (one can rest a day or so while you smoke the other), a pouch of Carter Hall tobacco, a few boxes of wooden matches, use a golf tee as a tamper and you're ready to go for about $20!

A corn cob pipe is in fact a wonderful pipe and not just for beginners. It gives a wonderfully pleasant smoke and only costs $5 - $8 at the most.

Tips:

Spend a few days and read through all the past threads on the pipe forum here and learn/absorb all you can on the "how-to's" of maintenance, packing the pipe, etc. This will get you off to a good start.

Learn how to PACK your pipe correctly as this is very important to enjoying a good smoke. The pipe stays lit far more easily, requires less effort to puff and the smoke is cool and flavorful. If you look on "you tube" on the internet here you'll probably find little video clips showing how to properly pack a pipe.

Don't smoke it to "fast" as it will get hot and the smoke is not as sweet and cool as when you smoke it at the right pace... You want to smoke your pipe with long, slow "sips".

Keep your pipe CLEAN and take good care of it and this will add greatly to your enjoyment of each and every smoke.

Went and got me a 20 dollar wooden pipe and two ounces of tobac, tried it out and didnt get much taste. I will try your guys suggestions and read the other forums. Hopefully i will learn to like this. Appreciate the input guys......
