do I pull this apart and back it or what do I do with this? I really wanted to get a celebratory smoke in today since I now have a thesis topic and a reader

I'm farrrrr from being an expert, but I have been lightly rubbing it out and packing as usual. It seems to burn fairly well that way, and I'm sure there are other ways to pack it as well.

Take one or two of the coins, however many it takes to fill your pipe, and using your thumbs and index fingers lightly rub it between your hands and break it up more like loose tobacco would be. If you rub it out too hard you'll wind up with a lot of fine particles, so go lightly and it should pack easier.

Just fold, stuff, and light works as well, its all about how you want the bowl to smoke.

Relighting is OK...letting it dry out a bit before packing may help.

Takes practice getting it all to click.

thanks for the tips all. I'm really liking this whole pipe thing. I'm trying a new pipe tonight too since my normal one has too big of a bowl for this backy. the only thing is the bowl of the pipe is a little warm to the touch...not sure how warm is too warm...if you know what I'm getting at

Re: packing question...never had backy like this before...

I just fold the coins up in halves dependant on how moist the tobacco is. Speaking of moistness, that may be part of your lighting problem. If tobacco is too dry, it burns very hot and gives an acrid smoke. If too moist, it refuses to stay lit. I often dry my tobacco a little under a desk lamp before loading a bowl. Packing may also be an issue but that just comes with a little time and practice. Don't be self-concious about relights. It comes with the hobby. Just enjoy yourself.

If you cannot hold the bowl in hand for 30 seconds, it is way too warm.

Since i've got you guys here I may as well ask a few more stupid, noob questions. do you ever 'purge' your pipe to keep it going? Is doing this bad for the smoking? how about mixing up the backy in the bowl, taking the pipe tool and mixing up the backy so the ash falls to the bottom and the unburnt backy comes to the top....?

So you can suck ash. Not a good idea. Dump the ash if its getting in the way of relighting. You may find as you get better at tamping and smoking that dumping the ash isn't needed as often. And purging is fine but I've never had it keep the pipe lit, oh course i never really worry if it goes out.
