Wooden stemmed pipes

Interesting. I was looking through an issue of "Pipes and Tobaccos" magazine and ran across a little ad. showing MacQueen Pipes. Thought these were rather interesting as you don't see wooden-stemed pipes very often....especially in new pipe offerings.

Wonder if anyone has any experience with these at all .... I would really have to adjust my smoking (bad) habbits to keep one of these in shape, as I can be a bit of a biter.

Re: Wooden stemmed pipes

I have seen them as far as the LotR replica pipes, but not the ones you posted pictures of. They definitely look interesting.

Re: Wooden stemmed pipes

I've talked to someone at Texas renfest who makes wooden stems for those long churchwarden type LOTR pipes. He told me they offer a nice, cool smoke. He also mentions you have to make sure to clean them pretty well.

Re: Wooden stemmed pipes

A friend of mine has one of MacQueen's churchwardens....the wizard, I believe. It's a really nice, well made pipe. It even came with a plastic guard for the tip to keep him from chewing it up.

I really like the looks of the Moretti "all briar" pipes (5th and 6th ones down) - pretty sweet looking imo.

Re: Wooden stemmed pipes

I have never owned one, but I too would be wary of possible wear and maintainence issues, vulcanite is bad enough.

I had heard of them before and had seen some photos as well, but to be honest, I had completely forgotten about them. Thanks for sharing this find with us. They are very nice looking pipes.

Get a churchwarden. Gnaw as you please, then saw off the tip and file a new bit; continue to puff as before. Kinda like the old snap-off clay pipes.
