Apple Slice Redux

There was some apple slice humidification chat a while back. I had a chance to test the apple slice humidification method thereafter.

There was a 100g (barely used, unsealed) pouch of some tobacco sitting in my drawer. When I first unsealed pouch about a year ago I had trouble not melting down my pipe and mouth. I thought best to close it up and come back to it another day. So another day arrives, about three weeks ago, and the stuff was way dry. And there was half an apple sitting in the fridge; I cut two slices and dropped them in the pouch, shook it and closed it up. A couple more shakes a few days later.

Revisiting the pouch after a week and the tobak was just right. Apple slices went in the trash and the tobak went into the poker. (It still burned like fire - but two skinny apple slices worked great on 90g of tobak over a week.)

Good to know.....I have heard that an orange peel will work the same way...but I have not tried it. Did the aroma from the apple affect the tobacco at all?

There was a hint or two - no apple drama, however.

I've tried this with an orange peel and left it in for 6 hours or so. My tobacco wasn't super dry so even in that short timespan it rehydrated nicely.

Re: Apple Slice Redux

What goes around comes around. Believe it or not, my grandfather use an apple slice about the size of a candy orange slice in his pouch of pipe tobacco. Wipe it off so the apple is not wet and then close the bag and shake it up. THX for the reminder.....

IMO, a paper towel and some distilled water will always be my rehydrator of choice for tobacco.

I've seen examples of people who used fruit slices in this manner and then forgot about it. In two weeks their tobacco pouch had become an 8th grade science project ...

Gotta make sure the apple is a little dry first. Air dry it while you smoke a bowl full, then put it in.

I used two slices and they were thin. I figured they'd dry out before anything sprang to life.

A paper towel and DW sounds foolproof but it won't make Galaga smile. I am all about making Galaga smile. Here - like this:

Try some apple slices if you leave the cap off your Enfamil and forget about it for a few weeks, Rick. I'm here for you, buddy. Try the Galas - they're great.

Re: Apple Slice Redux

The apple does work, can be a little too moist at times. In a sealed jar, a nice strip of orange peel, not the flesh of the orange - maybe 1/4" * 2" - will absolutely work. If forgotten, the orange peel will just get dry and hard - it will not go bad in my experience.

Re: Apple Slice Redux

In my youth when I first started smoking a pipe (1972) I bought a leather zippered tobacco pouch from Iwan Ries. My father told me to put an apple slice into the pouch to keep the tobacco "fresh". I did this, and from what I remember, it worked well.

Back then, I don't believe a portable humidifier (disc) exsisted.
