Radice twin bores - any thoughts?

Has anyone had experience with Radice twin bore pipes? Are the pipes themselves any good, and does the twin bore design make any difference?

Re: Radice twin bores - any thoughts?

The two Radices I own are both twin bores, so I can't compare them to non-twin bore radices ... but that said they are fantastic pipes IMO.

Does the twin bore design seem to work as advertised? Is it a cooler, dryer smoke?

Not sure if the "twin bore" system really works......seems more like a gimmick to me. That being said, Radice is one of the few brands that still oil cures briar. Dunhill stopped this practice a long time ago.

So oiling their briars is better or worse?? Why?

I guess it's a matter of opinion, but I've heard that this was the preferred method of curing briar back in the old days. Don't know why it's supposed to be better......maybe someone can elaborate on this topic.

Re: Radice twin bores - any thoughts?

Oil curing forces out all the tanins and impurities within the wood, then the oil itself is forced out using heat. This leaves very clean briar with very little residues to taint the smoke. Therefore the first smoke is meant to be cool and tasty and they are also more resistant to burn out. Smokers seem to notice a nutty flavour on break in.

Radice still use oil curing as does Bill Taylor on his Ashton pipes. I have to say the Ashton pipes i have smokes from brand new have smokes pretty well, however i cant really say they smoked any better than any other good quality pipes i have smoked. They are however very light weight for their size.

Re: Radice twin bores - any thoughts?

Radice pipes are excellent pipes. I have two, both smoke very well. But I don't really think that the double bore thing makes a difference. I certainly don't notice it.

Re: Radice twin bores - any thoughts?

I would say that the oil curing makes for an easy break in and I agree that I didn't notice much difference with the twin-bore. It can be a little harder to clean actually.
Not a knock on the brand by any means. Radice makes excellent pipes.
