965 & Balkan Sasieni: very similar?
I am just trying the Sasieni for the first time, and have had already several bowls of 965 in the last 2 weeks. And it seems I am a "Latakia man", as the others I have had lately (McBaren Plumcake, Borkum Riff, some other McBaren, Erinmore), may be with the exception of St Bruno Ready Rubbed (need to try the Flake version), have not said much to me....Is that the definite prove that I am more inclined to latakias? And what else may I like? I have some Penzance on my way now, and also some Nighcap and Navy Flake, are those any similar?

Re: 965 & Balkan Sasieni: very similar?
With the exception of the latakia, there really is nothing similar between 965 & Sasieni. Sasieni is a Balkan Blend with a fair dose of Orientals. The 965 is a cross-over English Blend with a fair amount of Brown Cavendish.
You apparently do like the Latakia in both blends and that may make you think that they are similar. There are hundreds of blends that use Latakia. Most are considered English Style Blends or Oriental Style Blends. Here is a listing of a few of the more popular blends with Latakia: Ashton - Old Dog McClelland - Bombay Court McClelland - Frog Morton GL Pease - Odyssey GL Pease - Mephisto GL Pease - Caravan GL Pease - Charring Cross GL Pease - Abingdon Dunhill - London Mixture Dunhill - Early Morning Pipe Dunhill - Standard Mixture - Mild & Medium Rattray - 3 Noggins Rattray - Accountants Mixture My Own Blend - 7000 Esoterica - Penzance Esoterica - And So To Bed Esoterica - Margate |

I am also a latakia lover, althoguh I love all non-aromatic styles (and a few aromatics). Nightcap is great, I am pretty sure you will like it after the other tobaccos you described. It is fuller then 965, and it also has perique in it, which is what really makes it good.

Re: 965 & Balkan Sasieni: very similar?
In connection with my other post about a large pipe to smoke this "latakias", I am curious about what pipes do you guys use for this blends, large ones to enjoy it, or smaller ones due to the strongness of latakias and oriental mixes? One thing I am almost sure, it will be very difficult for me to smoke more than 1 bowl during the day of a latakia blend...but I enjoy that one!

My latakia pipe is a GDB with a pretty big bowl, but that sort of worked out by chance.

Re: 965 & Balkan Sasieni: very similar?
I don't see size as mattering so much, but I would certainly dedicate one/a few pipes to it, as I've smoked it regularly from all my pipes, and they're definitely ghosted by it. Not a huge problem since I love it, but I'd really try and keep some latakia free for other blends (also that was a great excuse for me to buy some new pipes and vapers).

Actually, I don't smoke too many burley blends that are not aromatics. When I do, like Edgeworth Sliced, I usually still go with a Meerschaum or a Cob. What I did forget to mention, is that I have two pipes, each of which are dedicated to one specific tobacco. If you do that, smoke only one single blend of tobacco, in the same pipe over and over, that pipe will provide a very rich smoke with that tobacco. In time the Briar picks up the nuances of the tobacco and it just gets better and better. I have one dedicated pipe that I only use to smoke Momoyama and another dedicated pipe that I only use to smoke Royal Yacht. |
