New Pipe Smoker, Just Bought some Vanilla Cream

what should I expect? I will get to smoke it in 3 weeks, so I have plenty of time to order another baccy. I've been smoking pipes off and on for a few years, but I've never done it consistently enough. I did smoke for a few months a few months ago, and smoked Dunhill Nightcap and a house blend called "old Virginia", the latter giving a better, sweeter result.

I have an inexpensive $30-40 dollar briar pipe, which is good enough I suppose..

What can I expect with this Mac Baren tobacco? I find that often times I light and get a bit of tongue bite, which ruins the flavor for me...

I'm looking for a sweetish flavor that gives a good aftertaste

also, is it normal that I don't taste the tobacco while the pipe is in my mouth and I'm drawing on it? I taste it once I remove the pipe, but when the pipe is in, not as much.

thanks!

welcome to the jungle.
are you getting true tongue bite, or just burning your tongue by sucking the lighter too hard?
ive heard that this is one of the best aromatics but havent tried it myself.

good luck

Personally I'd go for a nice, not very wet coffee or choclate flavored aromatic. Haven't found any online so no advice there (haven't bought any online, more specifically), but if you go to a local b&m you can check out their bulk aros, to check if they're too wet. My b&m's chocolate and coffee aros are not very wet, and they're great since its not a terrible assault on your mouth, and theres no foul aftertaste. I think cof/choc flavors go more naturally with tobacco, as opposed to all things fruity, so that type of blend tends to work out better.

hmmm I don't know...is there much of a difference?

my goal: I want a pipe smoking session where I can say I was better off than before I started. (relatively few mistakes, good taste all the way through etc)

I also ordered "Scottish Mixture" by Davidoff. if for nothing else, as a reference.

i think true tongue bite comes from the acidity or sugar (or something that Virginias have more of than other blends), while what i described it more like an actual heat burn.

alright. I'll make sure to look out for that. I'll have to make sure to dry my tabak before I smoke it...

I'm very much looking forward to smoking this...too bad it has to be in the freezing cold! (I'm a student, and I sure can't do it in the house)

Re: New Pipe Smoker, Just Bought some Vanilla Cream

Geist, if it's any consolation I've heard that Vanilla Cream is a pretty bitey tobacco and somewhat tough to smoke... oddly enough its also a tobacco a lot of people seem to start off with.

Also I can say, consider using the "Frank Method" (do a youtube search for a 3 video series) to pack your pipe.

Finally I've noticed my inexpensive corn cob pipe to smoke drier then my $30-50 briars. I found a couple at wal-greens tonight for 4.50 a piece. Well worth it if you have them available.

I know how that is. Im a student as well (WVU), there actually seems to be a good number of us around. My number one feature im looking for in an apartment is a porch big enough for a chair and a place to set my pipe.

MacBaren Tobaccos have a nasty reputation for burning hot so its just as well you'll have to smoke it out in the cold. Dry it, pack it loosely and be careful when lightly so as not to overheat the pipe or tobacco. I'd recommend Peter Stokkebye bulk aromatics for beginners.

and some chilly weather to go along with it

Can you confirm my experience with being unable to taste when the stem is in the mouth?

Not really. Ive smoked some tobacco with very little flavor, where the plasticy taste of the stem is more noticeable than the tobacco, but not to where I couldnt taste it at all. Ill often leave my pipe hanging in my mouth for 2-3 minutes when im walking and dont notice anything.

Re: New Pipe Smoker, Just Bought some Vanilla Cream

I'm with nuti on this, the stem doesn't effect taste much for me. Is your tongue on the bit when its in your mouth? That could make you taste the plastic a lot I guess, but otherwise I don't really know what to say.

Also, is it only when you're sucking in, or for as long as the stem is in your mouth? I don't really know if I taste while I suck (since I never suck in for more than a few seconds), but I know I certainly still taste it if I just leave it in my mouth after having sucked in. If its the former I wouldn't worry, but if its the later that is very odd.

MacB Vanilla Cream is one of the tobaccos I tried early on when I first started pipe smoking. I concur it is more difficult to smoke than many other aromatics. There's something about the prospect of flavor potential when the two words vanilla and cream come together that just says "yum." However, it's not all that great, IMO.

Re: New Pipe Smoker, Just Bought some Vanilla Cream

Here is why they make so many different tobaccos. I really enjoy Vanilla Cream. To me, it tastes like good tobacco with a nice overlay of vanilla. Folks who have been around me when I smoke it claim it smells incredible. I only know I do like this. Had I not read the above critiques, I would recommend this as a good aromatic to start with. I have not had tongue bite from it, but smoke it slowly, if you do. I guess the only rule about pipe tobacco is, like cigars, smoke what YOU like and like what you smoke!

I think I can live by that
