Re: how to lite?
Well, what I do is I use a soft flame lighter or match to gently burn the top layer of tobacco while taking gentle but firm draws. Also I "walk" the flame across the tobacco to allow it all to get lit. After the first light, which I think they call the false light or pre light. I tamp the ash down back to the normal level (it should have expanded from walking the flame across it) and lighting it the same way, for a second time.
It should light a whole lot easier the second time, but if it doesn't, just rinse and repeat until you get the thing going. Just remember, slow, gentle, but firm draws.

Re: how to lite?
Matches work well for me, but you can use just about anything with a soft flame. Torch lighters burn too hot and will mess up your pipe. If you're having trouble lighting it could be a number of things: The way the baccy is packed, how moist the baccy is, what you're lighting with, all of these could be problems. Usually I pack using the 3 tamp method, then light by striking up a match and moving it over the top of the bowl while puffing. Don't get the match really close though, it may char the rim of the pipe bowl. Getting the sides burning right is always the hardest part

Re: how to lite?
Just a quickie on torch lighters, I have one and do sometime use it. The Guru of lighting 'Frank' actually recommends them. They have the advantage of "NOT" burning your pipe rim if used as he advises, held directly centre and above middle centre of the bowl. If you are smoking outside, the wind can blow out the match, or normal lighter, it can also blow the flame on to the side of the bowl, hence burning the rim.
The trick using a torch lighter is just a half second zap. I mainly smoke outside, no weather condition will deter me, rain, snow or storm. "Frank" actually says it is better for the taste also, because it lights the pipe so quickly. My main lighter is a Corona Pipe Magie (normal flame), but again torch lighters have their place. Matches are great but lets not forget technology has its place and advantage in all things and that includes the ancient art of pipe smoking. SEE STOPFMETHODE http://www.pfeifenstudio-frank.de/ |
