What is rubbing

I have been reading through some of the reviews and came accross several times people talking about rubbing out the tobacco. What does that mean. What does that entail. Most importantly what does it do.

Thanks

Steve

Re: What is rubbing

Basically, in laymans terms, it's the technique of rubbing the tobacco between your fingers to break it up into a more manageable texture. I tend to "rub out" my Escudo coins so it's easier for ME to pack and seems to burn better/cooler in my experience. Some people don't rub out the flakes/coins and prefer the fold/roll and stuff method. It all depends on the tobacco and the smoker IMO. So, in short...rubbing out=Breaking the tobacco up more to a ready rubbed/loose cut instead of in flakes/coins.

Steve, the next time you come to my house, I will let you try some flake tobacco that needs to be rubbed out. Maybe some Pirate Kake or Night Train. Or even some FVF.

Check out http://www.mac-baren.com/TopMenu/Exp...ll-a-pipe.aspx

They explain an alternate way to fill a pipe with flake tobacco without rubbing it out. This is the method I usually use.

That method is hard to get down pat. I tried it with my cob once, and it worked ok, but not anywhere near as easy as rubbing.

Re: What is rubbing

Its not as easy the first few times, but once you get it down it works great. I always get a slower burn, which I like. For me the challange was determining the right amount of tobacco for a specific pipe, but once you figure that out its pretty easy.

I always figured Pirate Kake to be more of a crumble cake than a flake. Anyways, flake's take some practice to figure out the best way you like to back em. I always used to rub out all my flakes, coins, and cakes when I started, now i've sort of gotten used to packing most flakes. Some stuff I still prefer to rub out, like most McClelland flakes.

You aare right, Pirate Kake is not a true flake, Smitty. My mistake. But we can still use FVF and rub it out.
