How to store unopened tins?
That's my question
![]() Seriously, though. I've searched for this information before, and there seems to be a lot of conflicting reports/responses. Which may explain why I'm skeptical. Coming from cigars, we all know RH 70%. So, that's why I find it hard that I can just purchase a tin, and let it sit out without doing anything and it not causing any ill effects. So, are there any chances to come to a definitive conclusion? ![]() |

Re: How to store unoped tins?
if it's sealed, just set it in your closet or someplace...
if it's open, then smoke it before a few months are up. some tins take about amonth before they come close to being the correct smokeable humidity... i know some ppl have a small coleman cooler, the kind to keep sodas in, about a case-worth or smaller (most could get away with one that'll hold 2 6pack cans worth, and put them in there. if you meant "unopen", then i can change your topic title.

Re: How to store unoped tins?
After picking up a few tins recently that have been sitting on a shelf (it's dry here in CO) since sometime during the 90's I have no concerns about storing unopened tins this way. If they can last for that long without any ill effects I'm sold

Re: How to store unoped tins?
I've been storing sealed tins and even pouches of tobacco for over 25 years and I have found that the easiest way to store them, when you have a few, I still have about 180 sealed tins, at this time, are in Igloo Coolers. A 48 qt cooler will hold about 60/70 tins, so that should be more than enough for most people. Also, keep the Igloo Cooler in the coolest place in your home, usually a basement is best, if you have one. You do not want to store tins of tobacco in an area that gets much warmer than 65 / 75 degrees for the long term. The tobacco will start to "cook" or "stove" if it is stored in temperatures exceeding 85/90 degrees. Stoving some tobaccos can benefit the tobacco, when accomplished under controlled conditions, however, that will not be the case when you are simply storing it.
Note: it's a good practice to mark your tins with the date that you purchased them or received them. That way your have a record on each tin for future reference. |

Re: How to store unoped tins?
As far as I know (which is not much), the only worries are high humidity for long term storing can equal rust (but I am not sure how much of an affect it will have on newer tins, ie production of the actual tins may include rust proofing) and some tins if dented may have a broken seal.
Great info, thanks Johnny |

Re: How to store unoped tins?
A properly sealed tin prevents moisture from entering or leaving the tin. One thing I love about pipe tobacco is that storage is way easier then cigars.

Re: How to store unopened tins?
Under the porch in my house is a storage room - sealed dry concrete room with a steel door. Never gets much above 60*, dark, dry and is at least 8'*10" by about 4'tall. Perfect wine / tobacco cellar and locking gun storage.

Re: How to store unopened tins?
I am jealous, that is perfect. I use to have something very similar in my home when I was back in Elmwood Park, Illinois. It was a bit smaller at about 5 1/2' x 8' x 6 1/2' high. I bought wine racks of various sizes and made it into a wine cellar, with the ability to store 650 bottles. The temp stay right at 65 degrees all the time, even in summer. Kept my pipe tobaccos and of course wine in there.

Did they provide you with a sampler pack to get you started, or did you purchase the sampler they sell on their website? |
