Jet Torch Lighters

So I dropped my butane pipe lighter and had to make a run to walgreens to pick some wooden matches up. I went ahead and bought a Jet Torch Lighter as well. I have heard alot of No-No's regarding lighting a bowl with a torch lighter, but remembered watching a youtube video of the frank method. I have had the greatest luck packing using his method but untill now been too afraid to try the torch.

I grabbed one of my estates (wasnt gonna try this on my new pete) and did it a little differently than frank due to a flap that made it hard to move it. I held it in position centered in the bowl. Began my draw and did a quick <1 sec flick of the flame tamped down the char and repeated once more. WOW! Perfect light. The entire top was evenly lit and the entire bowl smoked perfectly even down to the bottom.

After a few bowls with this lighter I would actualy say it is EASIER to scortch your rim with a bic, butane, or matches than with a jet torch. The flame moves around and skips all over the place with traditional methods. The fact that no matter what angle you hold your torch it will stay stationary AND the sheer limited amount of time you have the flame active reduces chance of rim damage.

Good deal Steve. I think the lighting method was the most useful aspect of the "Frank method". It sure has changed my smoking experience. Sometimes a little experimentation/trial&error pays off well.

burnzomatic makes a torch lighter that has a long ajustable neck. by bending the neck straight down and keeping the flame low i have used it with great success w/o burning the rims any worse than i already had. the inside of my bowls look none the worse as well.

Funny thing about pipe smoking is that each smoker gleans bits of useful information from different methods. I tried the Frank method of packing and met with some success but more importantly, "borrowed" a few ideas that I now use with some other tips.
His method of lighting makes me a little uncomfortable but if it works for you, great!

Wow Steve, I still wouldn't risk lighting the Pete with the torch lighter.
