I am looking to buy some pipe tobacco from JR Cigars. I really only wanted to purchase the Christmas Cheer, but the price is under the minimum, so I need to pick another tobacco.
I am new to pipe smoking and I'm trying to not store too many tins. I've narrowed it down to either another McClelland's, MacBarens, or Rattray. This is due to they all come in 100g/3.5oz size and therefore I believe represent a good value. My only other caveat is that I'm not looking for any of the aromatics from any of the three manufacturers, even if the flavoring is light. So, what are your recommendations? |

Re: Recommendations
I really enjoy the McClelland products, especially their "Matured Virginia" selections. Matured #25 is a favorite of mine.

Re: Recommendations
i'd recommend Rattrays Old Gowrie or Hal O' the Wynd for a nice VA with no bite at all (easy to pack, easy to light, etc).

Re: Recommendations
Since Christmas Cheer is a Virginia, why not try an English Blend. McClelland blends are very consistent and well worth the discounted price on JRs. You may want to consider Frog Morton or Frog Morton On The Town or a truly great Frog Morton Across The Pond. Frog Across The Pond is one of the few blends still available with Syrian Latakia in the mix, making it a very smooth, cool smoke!
You should keep in mind, as should all others that enjoy Syrian Latakia Blends, that Syrian Latakia is no longer available anywhere in the world and it may never be again. McClelland is one of the very few tobacco houses that still has a supply available in their house. They no longer grow it, at this time in history. It may be grown again sometime, in the distant future, but many doubt that it will. |

Re: Recommendations
ahh, yes, try the new Yenidjie Highlander. I also like McClelland's Arcadia, nice tasty English blend!

Re: Recommendations
Agreed. Both are very good blends (and Arcadia is much better than its counterpart, Black Shag). Speaking of the Grand Orientals, I also like the Yenidje Supreme.

Don't want too many tins?
Is that like saying I don't want too many cigars? Who wants to tell him about the slope? |

Re: Recommendations
The MacBaren HH Matured Virginia is another good no burn, no bite Va. It would be near impossible to get bit by this one I think.

Re: Recommendations
I finally made my choice. I went with Christmas Cheer 2007, and I went with Rattray's Old Gowrie. What do you think of my choices?

Re: Recommendations
Too may tins...? Let me think about that for a second...OUCH! that made my brain hurt! Edit: I've a few shots (I've lost count) of Canadian Royal whiskey, so just about anything would make my brain hurt. I love 6 day weekends. 4 days work, 4 days off, 4 nights work, 6 days off...

Re: Recommendations
Well since I got some new stuff today and don't wanna search the forum but still want to share my joy, this seemed like a great thread to post in because everything I got today came from recommendations from my fellow smokers; most recently, but others at different times over the last year. So here goes:
For the work day to keep me away from cigarettes two 50 count boxes of Arturo Fuenta Brevas Royales Now the good stuff: Hal O' the Wynd 100g Rose of Latakia 50g 1792 Flake 50g Bill Bailey's Balkan Blend 8oz Haddo's Delight 8oz Fillmore 2oz Barbary Coast 2oz Three Friars 2oz Odessa 2oz Bayou Morning 2oz Half&Half 8oz Thanks to anyone who recommended these tobaccos in their posts HATTER!
