Re: Please to explain....

Wait what? They're extra absorbant, which is good with a pipe that can pass one. For cleaning, I like to dip the small end in bourbon and pass it through the bit (tenin to lip), small end first.

Re: Please to explain....

I have tapered pipe cleaners. I use the big end for the shank, and up into the bottom of the bowl. For the smaller tapered end, I use that for the stem of my Eriksen straight pipe and my 1/8 bent Sasieni pipe.

I don't feed the pipe cleaner all the way into the pipe from the bit up into the bottom of the bowl. I always carefully take my pipes apart to clean them.

The only tapered pipe cleaners I have are bristled... I've pretty much been using them as normal, so I would love to hear other's applications.

I was told at the B&M that they are for pipe stems that are too smal for a normal cleaner. I have about four pipes (leonessa and 3 cheapy meers) that only the tapered end can be pushed through the mouthpiece. After you get ahold of the skinny end you can drag the remainder on through

Dan, Dan, Dan. I mean enough already, are we 2 or 56 going on 57?. (we know, we know, don't answer that)

Anyway to explain;

The tapered pipe cleaners are the perfect travel/on the go pipe cleaner. No matter the bore of the stem, one end of tapered pipe cleaner will fit and maximize cleaning with reguard to any pipe you have with you. This saves you from standing on the street looking at your unclean pipe. While that extra fluffy pipe cleaner you tried to clean with in that kind of small pipe twists and bends and does not enter to do its JOB.

Do not be this person.

Do not be unclean.

Be someone who's has a good travel supply of tapered pipe cleaners and save the world.

I have to use them for my kaywoodie, and still can't get it completely thru their drinkless system.

This is sooooooo unkind when a luminary like tx'65 hasn't heard of the tapered pipe cleaner. I bring light where there is darkness while you stand on street corners trying to be clean.
  • The merits of the big fluffy make perfect sense for at-home shank-swabbing (thank you, But'a)
  • and for reversed stem cleaning (thank you wo'lord)
  • I also acknowledge that the BJ Long's extra-long tapered pipe cleaners would be the perfect travel companion to several over-the-road pipes; that makes very good sense.

Thanks for your thoughts on the tapered pipe cleaner.

Re: Please to explain....

I must admit that I have never heard anyone give or explain a technical reason as to why tapered cleaners were designed. However, they seem to work a lot easier, using the smaller end, on pipes that have miss-aligned draft holes, where the shank and the bit meet. Of course, when that happens, it's simply a sign of poor craftsmanship. You rarely see that in high-end pipes, but it does happen. I have had a few miss-aligned pipes where it was nearly impossible to get a normal pipe cleaner through them, however, with a little twisting, the narrow end of a tapered pipe cleaner will find it's way through. Other than for that alone, I have no idea of what the original intention for them may have been!
