Smoked Penzance and got Insomnia!

As above, it has happen to me lately when smoking a bowl (rather big, in a Peterson 302) of Penzance. And this surprise me, because is not a tobacco known for being very strong in the nicotine department, and I have also smoked other blends alledgely stronger without problems, like Nightcap or even St Bruno Flake. And I smoke cigars also and never had a problem like this.

Has this happened to anyone else? Could it be another thing, not the nicotine?

Had you eaten before smoking? I think smoking on an empty stomach might increase the effects of the nicotine.

I personally look forward to a little bit of insomnia. After working all day, taking care of our daughter all night, its nice to get a little boost so that I can stay up for an hour or so and read. I am pretty much immune to caffeine these days.

I always smoke after dinner, so that should not be an issue. And the problem is that I coud not sleep well because my head could not "switch off". I am quite prone to this with some medicines or when I have a fever, but never got it smoking! And with 2 children , 5 and 2, I do need my sleep

Hmm. Well, maybe your mucous membranes were just exceptionally absorbent? I wonder if any food/drink/medicine combos would make your membranes more open.

Have you tried any other tobaccos lately to rule out it being the Penzance? Or was this last night?

Just lately I have smoked several other tobaccos, like Capstan flake, Mac Baren & SG Navy Flake, also St Bruno Flake and even Balkan Sasieni, plus Nightcap, 965 & EMP, and only had this, twice, with Penzance. And I drank a cup of tea with all of them and I am not taking medicines or anything, so that is why I was intrigued.

Anyway, is always a good excuse to try another tobacco, I can smoke Penzance in the morning

Maybe its something about esoterica tobaccos? Have you smoked any of their other blends?

Morning pipe??? I am jealous. Only evening smoking for me these days.

No, only tried Penzance, but Stonehaven is in the pipeline for the next TAD.

And the morning pipe would be only for the weekends, no time during school days!

Anything with Latakia in it gives me a sinus headache and instantly makes me tired after I get done smoking it. I do not inhale, but I do smoke through my nose and that must irritate the sinuses, but that doesn’t stop me.

Penzance hit me the same way, it doesn't seem strong or anything, but it sure kept me awake.

Sounds to me like you're body knows what it likes and also knows that you can't smoke while sleeping

I feel your pain, Carlos. After a nice bowl of Plumcake after dinner I was assembling a pipe sampler pack for [unmentionable cigar pass] and decided have another go at GLP Blackpoint. It was soooo good I had more. Doh.

Maybe pipes were meant for you. As a punishment.

I did some reading on nicotene last week. One thing about it is that it can act as a stimulant and a sedative depending on the dosage and the means by which it is taken in. This is a good informative read

Yes, I have noticed lately since I gave up my cigarettes and have been smoking a lot of pipes in the evening, that the tobacco is keeping me bug-eyed awake especially if I smoke the stronger stuff, so I switched to fewer and smaller bowls. Went to bed with no problem last night.

Same thing happened to me the other night after smoking a bowl of McC Dominican Glory - Maduro. Another one that doesn't have a ton of nicotine.

I smoked it after dinner as well and when I went to bed I could feel my heart racing!
