Re: Lookin' for a Bulldog
I might be wrong here (new to smoking pipes myself) but from what I have read of bulldogs (I happen to be partial to bulldogs and rhodesians) is that usualy they have 2 lines grooved on the outside of the bowl. Some would argue its not a bulldog without both lines that it is only a rhodesian. Also bulldogs typicaly have a diamond shank/stem. One of the older gorrillas would have to either confirm or slap me for bein' wrong however.

Re: Lookin' for a Bulldog
Oh definately! It is a beautifull pipe. Like I said, I am partial to those shapes of pipes myself.

I think its pretty much all up in the air. Some argue BD vs. rhodesian based on the lines (some people also say both require the lines, but that makes me wonder what shape something like that, or the one I've got, would be since its clearly at least one of the two unless "lineless BD" is a new shape. Some pipes also only have one line, etc), same argue about round vs. square shank, some argue based on straigth vs. bent, there doesn't seem to be any clear cut definition of what makes a BD or a rhodesian or a knock off of either. If you subscribe to the round vs. square shank argument (as I do) then I dunno what you call that pipe, since its got a triangle shank (still closer to a square, so I'd say its a BD) Back to the topic at hand though: the CS opinion of Tsugees seems to be very high, and that is a very good deal, but if I were you I'd still shop around some more in case something else catches your eye. |

Re: Lookin' for a Bulldog
Its nice looking pipe and the shape looks comfortable to me. I prefer deeper bowls myself, but it would probably make a great short smoke. I never owned a tsuge, but have heard good things about them.

Re: Lookin' for a Bulldog
Rookie here. Tsuge good, I'd say, and that BD or Rh or whatever it is is very handsome. I own one Tsuge; it was inexpensive and I enjoy it. I have two conventional bulldogs and regard them as the practically perfect pipe(s).
For me there has recently arisen a little zen in a pipe purchase. Style, shape, finish, size and all that jazz must speak to you alone. For any pipe purchase I would say, "Study it very closely and listen carefully before smoking it." Most can be returned if unsmoked. I have discovered that something as minor as a few millimeters of bit-width can be the difference between a comfortable or uncomfortable fit.

Nice article on the differences between the bulldog and rhodesian. I have got to get a pipe in this general shape....they look like they fit perfectly in the hand. |

Re: Lookin' for a Bulldog
I've come to accept that if a carver deems his work a "bulldog", then I guess it's a bulldog. Is it a "classic" bulldog, maybe not, but there are just so many variations that I've become happy to call a dog a dog & leave it at that.
That looks like a damn nice dog to me. I own one Tsuge & it's a great smoker ... I'm sure you would be happy with that dog. I own a few bulldogs, myself, from a few different makers. My favorite right now, is a Raddice Rind that I picked up not long ago, but I find myself picking up the first bulldog I purchased time & time again....An inexpencive Peterson Kilnary 80s bulldog. |

Re: Lookin' for a Bulldog
not all bulldogs/rhodesians have lines.
they can both be bent or straight. the only difference i've seen in the two that is an "always" in my experience is that a rhodesian has a round/oval stem, while a bulldog has the diamond shaped stem. i've seen both with tapered or rounded bits, too. |

Re: Lookin' for a Bulldog
I just bought a Peterson #999 that is similar to the one in the link above. Mine is the Rock of Cashel series though. I"ve smoked it twice and have loved it.
This is the one that I bought and they currently have another for sale: http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/ne...oduct_id=33341 It looks very similar to the Tsuge that you were looking at but this one is a lot cheaper.

Example ... this is coined as a Radice "bulldog" on smokershaven.com http://www.smokershaven.com/browsepr...-Twinbore.HTML ![]() but traditionally, the rounded shank and the higher bowl would both determine this as a Rhodie. Alternately, this Radice pup is termed a Large Rhodesian on smokershaven http://www.smokershaven.com/index.as...OD&ProdID=3677 ![]() but the square shank traditionally makes it a bull. After looking around & seeing stuff like this time & again, I gave up... ![]() |
