Welcome, Hendu!

It wasn't so long ago that I was introducing myself and now I (pulling up britches which have somehow grown too large) am welcoming new members.

The best thing I can say is that I hope you find your time here as rewarding as I have. The helpfulness and generosity of the BOTB/L here is non-pareil. I'm involved with several music and audio internet groups and here there is almost none of the bashing and disrespect that I often see there. Just a fantastic group of guys. Welcome, and thanks for joining the fun!

Re: Pipe Forum: new members (introduce yourself)

Good afternoon, all.

I'm a relatively new pipe smoker (30 years old, from the North Georgia hills) and I've found this forum to be a great resource thus far in my pipe career. I've been watching several of the informative youtube series (such as DubintheDam) and reading all that I can about my new hobby. I just got my first shipment of tobacco from the UPS man about 20 minutes ago and I plan on having a bowl of Dark Twist Roll Cake as soon as I get home. The selections I chose based on a few recommendations from the threads here and Dub's videos were:

Esoterica Penzance
Balkan Sasieni
MacBaren Dark Twist Roll Cake
Mcconnell Red Virginia
Orlik's Golden Sliced
Samuel Gawith Full Virginia Flake

If I'm missing a particular type/style, please feel free to make a recommendation, factoring in that as a newcomer I'd rather avoid really strong tobacco for now.

Thanks for all the help so far and I'll see ya in the forum.

Seth

Re: Pipe Forum: new members (introduce yourself)

TGIF!

I began smoking cigars about 4-months ago. It happened rather randomly as I was in a big-box bookstore right before the holidays and stumbled upon a copy of Cigar Aficionado. It was the issue with the new James Bond, Daniel Craig, on the cover. So I sat down with a cup of coffee and the magazine while the wife was shopping. Pretty much read most of it, was very intrigued, and so I bought the thing. Next thing I know I am doing all kinds of Google searching on cigars and visiting many forums. I get kind of obsessive with my hobbies. So within a couple weeks I have two humidors and a bunch of cigars. I must say that I am really enjoying the cigars. Although winter in Pittsburgh is a tough time to pick-up the cigar hobbie if you know what I mean. And so I sat on my back patio, with winter coat, hat, scarf, etc...smoking cigars, all winter. So I now subscribe to Cigar Aficionado and Cigar Magazine...

Now growing up, my Grandpap and Dad smoked pipes. I remember it well, the smell of Kentucky Club Mixture in the air...My Pap and Dad have been gone for a numbr of years now. Still miss them. I am not sure what prompted the "grey-matter" to start thinking about pipes and me smoking one and getting all nostalgic... So I get on this forum and some other ones and start researching pipes like a mad man. I end up getting indirectly referred by a thread on this forum, to J.M Boswell and Son, who happen to be located in my home state of PA. So after waiting and waiting for the right pipe at the right price to appear on-line, I made the plunge and purchased a real nice briar and some tobacco samples in one ounce bags.

Truth is I haven't smoked the pipe yet as I am waiting for the right time and place. Looks like mild weather is in the mix this weekend, so I might be out back on my patio tonight puffing away on my new pipe, reflecting upon the pleasant memories of Pap and Dad...

Thanks for reading.

Re: Pipe Forum: new members (introduce yourself)

Hey everyone, my name is Tim, Ive been looking for a pipe forum to gain knowledge on this hobby I enjoy so much. I have been smoking pipes for about three years, cigars for ten years. Due to the expence of cigars Ive been focusing alot on pipes lately. I have a decent collection of pipes, 6 Peterson system pipes, all older, a real old Peterson that I havent researched much yet but its an old Billiard. I have a Lane Era Charatan, an old Celius Root, a new Comoy Goldbark Dublin and several MM cobs. I smoke English and non-aro blends mostly but an occational aromatic. I love the OTC Burlys through a Corn Cob. I hope to have fun here finding new blends to smoke and just talk about pipes.

Re: Pipe Forum: new members (introduce yourself)

Hello everyone! Though I am new to this forum, I have been smoking pipes for about 35 years and am a member of some other pipe related forums as well. My taste in tobacco runs toward the matured Virginias end of things and I have recently started down the slippery slope of experimentation in cigars. So, pray for me....

I look forward to meeting y'all in time...

Jay

Good to meet both of you!

Take a look around, let us know of your tobacco preferences and opinions. After a bit of posting and time, a trade forum will open up to you where you can swap tobacco and pipes. It's a great way to try new tobaccos.

Hope to see both of you around.

Re: Pipe Forum: new members (introduce yourself)

Good evening folks, my name is Dominic.

I started smoking cigarettes at 18, i'm 28 now but I've quit for extended periods of time in between. I've always enjoyed the nicotine but never enjoyed the odor left behind by cigarettes. Not pleasent at all. I remember as a kid my dad's friend was a pipe smoker and to this day I can remember the aroma from the pipe warm, sweet and inviting. Now at 28 I still want a nicotine charge, but not as intense or as odorifious as cigarettes so I though cigars might be the way to go, they didn't interest me. So now I've come to pipes. I've been researching the last few weeks reading and rereading articles and watching and re watching videos (Hi DubintheDam). Earlier today I took the plunge and bought 3 nice looking estate pipes off Ebay and now I'm here to look around for advice while my pipes journey through the USPS system.

I live in california and I'm a hotel and restaurant management student. I like relaxing after long days and generally nicotine was apart of that relaxation ritual. From what I've seen and read pipe smoking seems to be the ideal way to go. I look forward to learning as much as possible and maybe eventually contributing to the forum.

Hi (again?)

I don't want to be redundant, as I have already introduced myself via post/question asking for advice. But for those who may not have read my plea for help, I just want to say hi.

I'm 44 yrs old, wife, 2 kids (one in college), and am a science teacher. My wife is a language arts teacher. We live in a small college town where we both graduated (many yrs ago).

I only recently fell in love with the pipe (few weeks ago). I have smoked a cigar now and then over the years but never a pipe (well there was that one time as a 13 yr old when I borrowed my fathers Dr. Grabow and cherry tobacco ... sucked it till it got cherry red hot, then put away wet.. but that doesn't count .. does it?.... I never got caught).

I must say that I am completely hooked on this hobby. I used to leave work late most days, but now (at the end of the day) I rush out to my vehicle and light up as soon as I can.

I really want to learn as much as I can, whenever I can I read about tobacco and various pipes. Currently I have a Nording Freehand Giant, Nording Freehand Moss, 5 Jobey's (another just arrived last night..I love em), a Savinelli Hercules, 2 Laroccas, a Cassano, several no name italian/french briars, two estate pipes, two meers and 7 MM cobs (I know I'm forgetting at least one briar .. but I can't remember as I have not fully unpacked everything yet). I'm still shopping and am considering a Brebbia, Randy Wiley, Stanwell, Comoy (is that the right name?), and maybe ... just maybe a Dunhill (though I do not know if it will be worth it to put $500 in just one pipe ... I mean, is there really that much of a difference in smoke quality?)

All my pipes are new except the 2 estate pipes ... so with the exception of the cobs and meers ... I'm a bit overwhelmed with the breaking in process. I actually put the honey/ash coating at the bottom of one of my generic briars .... it tastes pretty good... but I read that most of you do not recommend doing that to a decent pipe.

My wife is beggining to roll her eyes a bit ... she can't say much though ... all the years of buying jewelry... now it is finally paying off ;-) Though new, I can offer this advice to others: don't be afraid to spend money on jewelry for your wife, as it will reward you in the long run when you finally find a hobby that you really love. :-))

Welcome! I am new myself .. having just joined .. was it yesterday? .. LoL

Anyway, I am also very new to the pipe, but have already signed up for classes with DubintheDam, Madhatter, and quite a few others.

Seriously though, check out DubintheDam's youtube (his signature on his profile) ... lots of very good info there.

The last two days have been very productive. I have learned more since joining this site .. than in the prior few weeks searching the web on my own.
