different packing method

i was talking to some guys about the way they pack their pipes-i'm pretty new to the whole thing-one guy told me about the "loose pack" method, which seems to take care of a lot of the problems i was having (tongue bite, heat, keeping it lit)-anywho, ya just dribble baccy in till it hits the top & only press down enough to keep the baccy from falling out the bowl (don't use a tamper)-if there's any room left, do the same thing again (i haven't been able to add baccy a 3rd time packing this way-i thought i was packing loose enough w/the "3 step" method, but i guess not-now i have less relights, the bowl doesn't heat up as much, tongue bite is gone unless i'm smoking too fast, & the bowl burns all the way to the bottom-thought i'd toss this out here for the other newbies that may be packing too tightly too-hope it helps

Re: different packing method

the frank method works great for a long burning bowl, just didn't have luck w/the other problems-probably operator error

Re: The superman, mom, dad packing method.

there is no one golden method... given that there are at least 30 standard pipe shapes and about 7 basic sizes and at least 150 'common' tobaccos - that's like.... I don' know, what - at least 4 different possible combinations of pipe shape, style and tobacco. (okay, so I am bad at math - you get my point)

There are some pipe / tobacco combos that work more gooder. I have a medium billiard shape, combined with McB Scottish mixture and Frank method is perfect.... just spot on. Try the same thing with a flake like 2015 and a large bulldog and you get doo doo.

Really, you have to find a few key variables and adapt accordingly:
1. humidity you like tobacco / humidity particular tobacco wants to be
2. size of pipe and how tight it will accept being packed
3. cut of tobacco / to rub or not to rub
4. how hard / fast you smoke

Once you have all that dialed in, go buy some flake tobacco and start all over again... I like to pack flake like an upside campfire. Bottom is loose packed large chuncks of tabak. Middle is partially rubbed softer bits. Top is fully rubbed fluffy tobacco. Sprinkled on very top are the fines as tinder. Light, light, tamp, light, tamp, light and enjoy.

To the essence of the problem (great song if you know e: ) - your pipe, your tabak, your style of smoking will all dictate what works. I can tell you what is a magic combo for me - and you may hate it. Really, really now - all you can do is gain experience. The more pipes and tobacco you smoke, the more you can refine your process. (After all, if we were not a group of doddering, tinkering SOB's why would we bother with the trouble of smoking a pipe in the first place.) All this futzing around with pipes and lighters and tobaccos and pokers and reamers and stands and cabinets and ageing and studying dottle and writing reviews - that is what makes smoking a pipe a hobby and not a nicotine addiction pacifier.

Re: different packing method

have ya tried Fold n' Stuff method with Flakes yet?

For the first couple months or so i tried that method on and off, but i could never get it to work right. Now that i look back, i dont think my "fold n' stuff" method was wrong, but my actual smoking technique was lacking. "Fold n' Stuff" is so simple anyone can get it right.
And i feel it effects the flavor of the smoke in a positive way, not to mention longer burning time, less chance of bowls burning out on windy days, and super duper EZ to pack when out on the town.

Basically you take your flake.. let it dry out a bit (flakes take a bit longer to dry out).
Then hold the flake so the long way is horizontal.
Fold in half once upwards. The longest part of the flake should still be intact.
Next fold in half From Left to right. This will most likely cause the flake to break in the middle of the fold. The break will look messy like a frayed end of a rope, the messy end goes DOWN to the bottem of your pipe. finally take some bits rub them out very very fine and use it on top as tinder.

You may find the flake is a bit too big for your pipe. If its just a tiny bit bigger, just lightly mush it around until it fits properly. remember to save room for tinder.

If the flake sticks out too much (around 1/8 of an inch or more) consider cutting about 1/4 of an inch off the long side of the flake before you start. then use what you cut off for tinder. Cut off a bit more than you think you need to... if the flake is too short thats not a problem, if its sticking out of the bowl, you can mess things up by mushing it around too hard.

so thats all there is to it.. fold, fold, stuff, tinder, light. its foolproof.
then why didnt it work for me for months??

Smoking method.
Its like tending a very very gentle fire.
You need enough O2 moving through the pipe to keep things smoldering, not enough and the flakes go out.

Draw too hard, and your only going to burn the middle of the tobacco, as the heat is drawn down into the center of the pipe. This also seems to cause the moisture and heat to build up more quickly. uneven burns, moisture, heat.. ugh...

But if you take LONG, SLOW DRAWS. Then the SURFACE of the tobacco has a chance to catch. The heat is allowed to disperse along the top of the flakes, so all that moisture and heat is not tunnling its way into the center. once the surface is caught up, you can take nice sips on the flakes and not have to worry about them going out every 10 seconds.

Hope this helps someone.... im just jazzed up that i got this "fold n' Stuff" method down.
Ive been smoking solani 633, and orlicks golden sliced like its goin outta style!
