U.S. mail in and out are x-rayed. Outbound packages "inspected" before that. Just ain't worth a career for a couple of ounces of booze, especially when you can get a couple of ounces of alcohol for cleanng from elec maintenance shops.

Oh and thank you for what you're doing over there in Iraq. Your work is greatly appreciated.
Alcohol is acceptable in the U.S. military and sold at Class 6 stores on bases all over the world. Possession and use of alcohol by U.S. military, contractors for the U.S., and/or DoD cvilians in Iraq is not acceptabe (nor is it tolerated).

Anyway, thanks all for the advice. I did pick up more tobacco with the thought I'd rather have too much than run out. Same wth pipe cleaners. Picked up 400 more of those.

Re: Sandbox Survival?

I would not lug alot of tobacco with you, most tobac shops will mail to an APO Address.

The best thing I got during my tour of Kuwait was gift cards from Amazon.

God Bless You and Your Mission!

I'll onlly be there a short time (~6 wks) this time so I don't plan on having anything mailed to me. When I've gone for 6 months or so, I have had no problem ordering off the net.

as he already stated, it's not a US Military thing, it's part of the culture/religion of where he's going to be at. they don't allow alcohol in Iraq at all (although they were the first to create beer). and just like during field training, they're not suppose to drink at that time either... i know when i travel, our team doesn't allow drinking during the exercises (but before, between, and after, they make up for it).
---
edit:
if i were you, i'd make sure i had enough tobacco, a couple of tampers, plenty of cleaners, and enough pipes for each type of tobacco i'm taking.

That's not the case. Iraq is not a dry nation (unlke Kuwait). It's actually the U.S. chain of command, through gerneral orders, that will not allow U.S. military or DoD civilians or contractor not to have alcohol in Iraq (there might be a possibilty of getting a beer or two at the chow hall during the superbowl as that's happened before).
