Question about tinned tobacco

This has probably been asked many times, but I am a newbie, so here it is again. I am discovering the pleasures of MacBaren (after growing a new tongue, thank you very much). Locally they only have the 3.5 oz tins. What is the best way to store it? I'm sure the tin is no longer air-tight once it is opened. And whats with the frilly "skirt", does it have any practical function for moisture, or is it just eye candy?

I am using a coffee jar with an air-tight lid (hijacked from the wife's kitchen, shhhh) and the entire tin will not fit in here. I had to dump the contents into a ziplock and that fits in the jar. Is this OK?

One thing I noticed (newbie) is when the can is first opened, the aroma is overwhelming (as is the bite). After a bit of ventilation the tobacco is no longer "sticky" but not dried out either, and it smokes much better. Am I wrong about this?

MB Vanilla Cream is just awesome. I also tried the Black Ambrosia but my first attempt was fresh outta the tin (and wrongly packed), and I had to wait till my tongue grew a new epidermis before trying the Vanilla.

Your fine to just leave the tin as it is. If it dries out at all its extremely simple to rehydrate it. Alot of guys around here also use mason jars

Re: Question about tinned tobacco

I usually dry my baccy some before I pack it up and generally it leads to a nicer cooler smoke. As stated above, while the tins aren't airtight they'll keep the baccy good for at least a couple 3-6 months without a second thought.

I usually toss my open tins into ziplock bags.

No. You're right on. I usually open a tin in advance of smoking it (depending on what kind/how wet it is).

Re: Question about tinned tobacco

Just make sure that when you transfer it out of the tin that you either write on the ziplock or label the jar with what is in it. You don't want to be playing "Guess the Tobacco" later on. Been there, done that.

Re: Question about tinned tobacco

I love these things for short time storage. They seem to keep the correct hydration. I doubt the tobacco will "age" in these containers but they are great for opened tins and baggie samples.

Re: Question about tinned tobacco

Great, thanks for the responses. I have to see how long a tin lasts me, don't get more than a bowl or two in for a day, and if I get to finish it.

Re: Question about tinned tobacco

When I open a tin, and I am not going to be smoking the whole thing in under a month, I put the tobacco in a mason jar. I also buy a lot of bulk tobacco, and that also gets stored in mason jars.

Re: Question about tinned tobacco

Well, a followup to myself (thats a good sign, I'm sure).

Now that I'm close to finishing my FIRST whole tin of MacB Vanilla Cream (and MacB Black Ambrosia following closely), and looking forward to the satisfying pssht of a newly opened can (thats all my "cellar" has, newbie). Now, where do I get more baccy?

The local store is all out, I bought the last of their stock and they don't seem to know what to do for reordering -shaking head- And they are pricey, $15 for a 3.5oz tin (or 100g for the metric crowd).

Online prices seem to vary from $8 to $15, thats quite a variation. And I think I read somewhere that they can't ship to NY State from outside? Any clues, or recommendations?

Re: Question about tinned tobacco

I use the mason elite jars for all my open tins.

They are wide mouth and come in 8 or 16 oz sizes. They run about 4.00 for 4 jars.

I prefer the shallow jar compared to the jelly jar shape. They are easy to wash and reuse.

Re: Question about tinned tobacco

I thought I'd pipe in here with a question. When my dad was smoking a pipe, I remember from time to time that he would throw a small apple wedge into his large can of Granger. Later in life, I remember him dumping 2 or 3 cans at one time into a large circular Tupperware container and sealing the top. Any issues in using the small apple wedge for large baccy tins or Tupperware containers?

Regarding the small mason jars seen above, I assume that the jars are stored in the closet away from sunlight? And I would also assume that moisture from the tobacco somewhat equalizes in that small container regarding a constance humidity?

Apple wedges can introduce mold into the tobacco, there are safer ways to rehydrate tobacco like mini pucks you just dip in distilled water, or some people use wet paper towels. Yea it's best to keep them away from sunlight, and yes it does equalize.
