Pipe shapes and sizes?

Is there a primer somewhere on the different shapes and sizes of pipes? I have read through the FAQ.

My girlfriend's Dad is a long time pipe-smoker and he has recently picked up cigars to be able to hang out with me. I would like to pick up pipes to be able to hang with him. I would just ask him, but I kind of want it to be a surprise.

So I have learned here that I should maybe start out with 1 or 2 Cob pipes. I checked out Frenchy's site but there are a bunch of different styles.

I understand that something with a bend in it would be better for a newbie smoker?

Should I get a Cob and a Briar?

Any advice on what I need besides what kind of pipe would be most welcome, in addition to the pipe info. (or if someone wants to put together a "newbie kit" for me I would gladly trade some stogies or buy it from you).

Thanks.

Re: Pipe shapes and sizes?

Call Frenchy. Get a couple of pipes from him and he usually sets up his shipments with the stuff you need to get going anyway. If you tell him your situation; he will take good care of you!!

Re: Pipe shapes and sizes?

Thanks for the info.

Are the shapes just a personal preference thing or is there a certain shape that is better for certain tobaccos?

I guess the different shapes all smoke differently?

I see exactly where this is going, a whole different slippery slope.

IHT - NO!
what matters is if the pipe is MADE correctly, meaning that all the holes are drilled and end up where they are suppose to. that's what makes a pipe smoke good (and the smoker has some input on how well they pack the pipe and tamp/pace, etc).

we could get into a discussion on what width bowl is best for flakes or ribbon, but that's ALSO personal preference.

if you're goin to pick out a briar, pick one that appeals to YOU, as you'll be the one smoking it. if you buy a pipe you don't like to look at, isn't appealing, then you won't smoke it.

if you find one that appeals to you, and just want reassurance that it's going to be a decent pipe (from a good maker), just ask.

Re: Pipe shapes and sizes?

Great, that was the info I was looking for.

My guess is that if I get a briar (that I like the look of) from Frenchy I will be in good shape.

Thanks guys, I sent Frenchy an email.

I'd be willing to get you a starter tobacco kit going of a couple different types of baccy, or you could always go thru the pipe NST: http://www.clubstogie.com/vb/showthr...79#post1467879
edit--I'd only be able to do a couple bowls of several different types; shoot me a PM if interested.

in my experience, different cuts make for different pipes. rather narrow bores for flakes, rather wide for loose cut. more here http://www.pfeifenbox.de/articles/flake.htm

a beginner will do well not to chose a long, heavy pipe. classic shapes are reccommended.

i've seen that site before, but i still have to, based on my own experiences, say that it doesn't make much difference what size/shape the bowl is (i've got a huge bowled leoanardo da vinci ball with about a 1" diameter chamber, smokes flakes like a dream).
i've read about "this would be a perfect flake pipe" etc.
anyway, it's all based on our individual preferences and experiences.

of course, my experiences could be flukes about flakes and i'm dead wrong, which is why AD720 needs to smoke it up and find out.

I received your package today and all I can say is wow! I only had a minute to check it out before I had to rush to the airport. Incidentally, my package from Frenchy also showed up today! I seriously thought about canceling my trip but it will give me another reason to really look forward to getting home.

Pictures to come later this weekend and thanks again!
