Pipe forum members' St. Patrick's Day Plans?
Anyone doing anything fun?
I'm running in a 5K on Saturday in my whole Guiness Beer getup and then drinking lots and lots of beer. I'll probably light up a Peterson pipe with some sort of Irish blend.

Re: St. Patrick's Day Plans?
The actual day is the 17th which is Monday. Most people I know are celebrating this weekend so they don't have to go into work with a hangover.

Re: St. Patrick's Day Plans?
Any holiday that promotes drinking is alright in my book. St. Patricks day - good, Cinco de Mayo - good!!!
I'm not irish but my wife is and she doesn't drink that much. I have to make up for that deficit.

Don't forget to sign the prop 3.17 petition on Guinness.com to get St. Patrick's Day made an official holiday.
Any holiday who's sole purpose is to party is exactly what we need. ![]()

I do believe that a few pints o' the black stuff are in order, and perhaps a bowl or two of some navy flake (do not have anything Irish yet, not much of a cellar to speak of
)

I think a bowl or two of Peterson Irish Oak in my Peterson St. Patrick's day pipe will do the trick. Other than that I'm working, and under the legal drinking age

I'll be doing some landscaping. I'll try to sneak a 6 pack of Guiness in there somewhere.

Re: Pipe forum members' St. Patrick's Day Plans?
Plans for St. Pats.
Not getting drunk...call me alternative! Avoiding the center of Amsterdam where there is said to be an estimated 25 to 45,000 Irish descending for the weekend. Maybe wearing my kilt if I'm in the mood, but it does take a long time to get dressed, failing that - some green will be worn! Do go for dinner in a posh local restaurant with some friends and my wife. And..of course I will smoke some University Flake in my St.Pats 105. I'm often asked what is THE thing for the Irish to do on St.Pats...answer... fly to New York! No city in the world celebrates St.Pats like New York. Paddy's day is a celebration of all things Irish with a strong emphasis on getting completely pissed. I sometimes call it Alcoholics Quilt-Free Day. But on a deeper level it is very much a time for the Irish to connect with home while they're overseas. A phone call will be made, a greeting card received, church attended and if you're in an Irish Regiment anywhere in the world a march around the barrack square with some Brigadier asking you silly questions at the end and then getting very, very drunk! Ironically people in Ireland don't have to go to mass on Monday, word-up is Sunday's attendance will do for both. The main reasons for this are the Irish are too busy and stressed making money to pay for their over priced homes (no it's not just the USA!) and there isn't enough priests to go around, the latter possibly caused by the fact that there are better prospects of power, wealth and corruption in business and politics these days...and being gay and Irish no longer forces you to move to England or join the priesthood. Happy Saint Pat's...and just for the record...he was Welsh! |

Re: Pipe forum members' St. Patrick's Day Plans?
The kilt is predominantly a scots thing, but traditionally bagpipers in Ireland where kilts...the whole kilt thing is a bit of a gimmick, although it does have a genuine and real history many tartans have been invented to meet market demand, and of course one of the most demanding markets is the Americans be they Scottish or Irish just looking for a little old style tradition.
I wear Irish National tartan as opposed to a particular clan. But as my irish family name is believed to be derived from a scots name there is a 'clan' tartan I could also wear. I just wasn't too cracked about the color. Kilt wearing in particular has become more popular for weddings and black-tie functions in Ireland since the success of 'Braveheart'. Most costume rental shops do the full outfit. I bought mine online from Inverness for my own wedding a few years ago...they cost a fortune but you can add different jackets, socks, sporan's for different occasions, when there is a function or big party on, people beg me to turn up in my kilt, but as mentioned it is a hassle to put on with all the gear and the last thing you want is some drunken Paddy spilling a pint of Guinness over you. ![]() Last edited by DubintheDam; 03-16-2008 at 04:12 PM.. |
