Certainly feel free to experiment, as everyone is different and may be looking for a different result. But MY experience tells me to work the flake to the desired result while moist and then let it dry.

For certain tobacs some people will go as far as to rub out the entire tin upon opening.

Hey Ev how do you like to smoke your beloved Stonehaven?

Re: Preferred method to smoke flakes

So last night i had to try the Penzance but I was a little too excited and it wasn't dry enough. It didn't totally ruin the smoke I just had to work more. It gurgled alot which I figured was due to the moisture level. I let all my new flakes from every comapny dry out for 2-3 hours last night and just sat down to try the Rum Flake (which I am thoroughly enjoying) and even it is gurgling but not as much. I'm trying the fold and stuff method from MacB website and now I'm thinking this may be the cullprit? Any thought's or advice?

Assuming you're not smoking from the same by-now-very-swampy briar over and over... ? Let a few flakes (a bowls worth) sit in time-out to dry for 30-minutes or so. That usually does the trick, gurglewise. If not - let sit a little longer - rub a bit more - pack a little looser - smoke a little slower.

Folding and stuffing coins and flakes often works fine as a smoking method but, maybe, not as easily as rubbing out and loose packing. The fold and stuff thing hinges a bit more on knowing the tobaks burning characteristic and moisture content, in my experience. Stuffing a rolled or folded too-wet flake can be problematic. Took me a while to find the right combo of moisture, rolled & rubbed for certain flakes to smoke seamlessly.

Re: Preferred method to smoke flakes

I tried my first stuffed-flake yesterday (MacB Vanilla Cream Flake). Wow - the flavor is 2x the ribbon cut version! Higher nic volume too, methinks.

I did dry it out for 30 minutes but it was still too wet, lesson learned.

Rolling it over and stuffing (the MacB tutorial) was easy, but I miscalculated the bowl size (its deep and tapered in the Jirsa) and a single flake piece only filled 1/3 of the bowl. Next time I use 2 strips staggered for the tapering. Dropped the dribbles and dust on top and it lit up like a champ. It did smoke for almost an hour, but I was babying it since I could feel that it wasn't dry enough.

I likes!
