Newbie Musings

Hello folks, just a brief introduction here. I have wanted to try pipe smoking, off and on now, for many years and the interest has just been kindled again. This time I think I'm actually going to follow through and buy a couple pipes and tobacco next week. I've been lurking here on CS reading threads for the past week along with various other sites.

I have pretty much decided on initially buying five corn cob pipes from Frenchy along with an estate Meerschaum I've fallen in love with from another online seller (if someone doesn't beat me to it before payday). I know I will end up with some Briar pipes eventually but I think the corn cobs will be a good way for me experiment with a variety of blends to find the right styles and then invest in a couple nice, mid-range, Briars once I have identify blends I want to smoke regularly.

From reading various reviews, I have about five tobaccos picked out that I think I will like and will be purchasing these next week as well. I think I will enjoy collecting as much as smoking so I will be buying an extra tin of each to start a cellar with. My father was always smoking a pipe while growing up and I always loved the smell so I am pretty sure I am going to like the hobby.

Looking forward to smoking my first bowl with ya'll and participating in these forums as much as a newbie can.

Hey man, let me be the first to welcome you to the pipe section and CS in general. I like your line of thinking with the cobs.

Re: Newbie Musings

Welcome, Tobit (from another newbie)!
What 5 tobaccos are you starting on?
For me, in January I started with
TK-6 from Lane (mild cherry aromatic)
Trout Stream from pipesandcigars.com (butterscotch aromatic)
Anniversary Kake from pipesandcigars.com (va/per)
If you hang around here, I give it 8.254 days until you cave and buy a briar.

I already have a couple briars picked out, just trying to spend my small income wisely.

Contemplating these five tabakas:

Ashton Winding Road
Ashton Smooth Sailing
McClelland Frog Morton
G.L. Pease Maltese Falcon
Cornell & Diehl Epiphany

Re: Newbie Musings

If you try the Falcon and find you like it, I would personally suggest the Dunhill 965 as another step. I really like the 965, it seems to have a little more overall flavor and aroma (I like the Maltese Falcon too, btw). Just a thought from another newbie.

Re: Newbie Musings

Regarding Briars, here is a Stanwell estate pipe I am considering. I really want to start with some corn cobs though as I want to slowly start collecting briars and dedicate each one to specific tobaccos.

Re: Newbie Musings

I haven't tried any of those, but the Falcon and the Frog are on my "to buy" list . . . right now I have tins of Squadron Leader, Irish Flake, and Scottish Cake on deck. I picked up 4 estate briars for $30, a great deal, and so far they smoke great. That Stanwell looks awesome, go for it!

Yeah but there's this estate, unsmoked, meerschaum is tempting me first though. I don't like many meerschaums because of the gaudy and tacky carvings most have. However, this one is unique and I really like it so I am reluctant to share the link until pay day on Thursday and hoping it will still be there.

Re: Newbie Musings

I wish you all the best in your new hobby. I was sucked into it because of a friend of mine, I of course sucked him into cigars. A good variety of tobacco is a good way to go. You are on the right path to another slope, enjoy!!

That Stanwell is a good looking pipe!
Here's another site that sells really nice, inexpensive pipes. Take a look around the site, and don't be scared off by the prices of the high end stuff.
Marty Pulvers sells good pipes at good values, and stands behind his products.
Check this place out:

http://www.pulversbriar.com/
Check out his specials page. Also take a look at the Italian and Danish pages.....some very nice, inexpensive pipes.

Here's another great retail that sells nice Estate pipes.

http://www.briarblues.com/

Mike is another great retailer.

Welcome to CS pipe forum. Sounds like you have a great plan. Wish I would have thought of that myself.

Welcome to the pipe forums. Don't worry about that sucking noise. You'll get to where you just ignore it.
