Re: My first home made pipe

I like the shape - I have made one from the pimo kit and reccomend it... it is not that hard, just takes some time and elbow grease.

Any thoughts to doing more / finer sanding? I feel like with mine I should have kept going, but remembered my father's words..."Better is the worst enemy, of good enough."

In any case, a great first effort - enjoy it!

Nice looking pipe! I'm sure it will make your piping experience even more gratifying as you are enjoying it.

I got it as part of an order from smokingpipes.com, they are actually a lot stronger and more stable than I had expected, as well as pretty darn cheap.

I do think that if I make another I will spend more time with the finer sand paper. There are a couple of areas on this one where I just did not quite get some of the deeper marks out. Patience is probably the hardest skill to learn in pipe making .

That is a truly beautiful pipe. Can anyone with patience carve a pipe or does it take some artistic skill as I am lacking in the latter.

Personally I do not really think that I have all that much artistic bent. I think that if you take a look at other pipes and decide what type you like, just keep that in your head and have the patience to carve it out. I would suggest making some plans on the briar before beginning, so you have a guideline to the shape, where to cut, sand, etc.

Re: My first home made pipe

Just for the heck of it, this is what my Savinelli natural that I got from Frechy looks like with the same treatment

I can see why they would not finish it themselves with the blemishes (there is also a large blemish on the rim), but for the price, I really do not notice them .

Re: My first home made pipe

DUDE! You captured the gain very well. Was that an ebuchant or plateaux? This is a pipe I would be proud to hold in my grasp. I need to get off my lazy but and finish sanding the one I have been working on.

Re: My first home made pipe

Dumb question:

Do you have to use a lathe or turning press or something like that? Or can you use hand tools? (assuming the shank and bowl are pre-drilled)
