My first home made pipe

So I decided that I wanted to try to make one of my own pipes, at least once. I got one of the bent pipe kits from pimo, and this is what I have gotten it to. I still need to wax it, but I am liking the looks of it so far.

I call bullshit - you bought that!!!

Just kidding - nice work Bro. I like it a lot. I am curious, did you end up there based only on the specific shape or did the graining catch you as well.

Please post those final pics, and keep it up!

Wow that is really a unique shape! I love it! It seems like a nice large body pipe for someone with big hands like me.

Re: My first home made pipe

That is a very well done first attempt! Very unique shape. Are you going to stain it at all before you wax and buff it? A little staining could really bring out that grain.

The junction between the shank and stem can be cleaned up pretty easily by laying some sandpaper(200 to 400 grit) on a really flat surface and then slowly sand that shank end across that until you have a flush fit with the stem and it will take away the rounded edges of the shank end as well.

Congrats! Look forward to seeing the final pics!

That is really sharp looking! Nice work.

Kit from Pimo you say? I might have to look into that. Of course, my pipe would probably end up looking like a donkey knuckle but what the heck, you only live once.

Re: My first home made pipe

I will admit that the pictured do not show some of the imperfections, it is a little "lumpy" , but I really like it. I had the shape mostly in my head when I had it in just block form, though it modified a little due to saw errors . For anyone also wanting to do their own, I suggest a LOT of patience. The grain really did not affect the final shape, I really just tried to stick to my mental picture, I was just really excited that it had such a nice grain in the block that I received. I have used just a little olive oil to darken it a little and bring out the grain somewhat, I decided that I would try to pace myself at least a little and not get all the stains and what not, just keep it a little more natural while I found out if I even could do my own.
I will try to square up the stem a little more tonight, and hopefully get it polished as well (I have to see if the pads that I got will work or if I need to get something softer, glad I thought to keep pieces as I was sawing ). If all goes well, I will post final pictures tonight.

I think, good smoker or bad, that I will always like this one .

And thank you for the comments and advice, much appreciated.

Re: My first home made pipe

That thing bears an eery resemblance to my childhood (who am I kidding, I'm still a runt) memories of this one super Mario boss, who was pink and threw eggs at you, but had that exact facial expression (chamber = mouth, etc).

That said, while I could never smoke it, since it'd creep me out, the grain is nice, and once you finish off the stem thats gonna be a very interesting pipe, congrats!
