I agree with Dogs, the three I have had little/big problems like that. They're fixed now, but had I been a newb I would have had many bad smokes from them and not understood why.

Good luck with your recent acquistions

Well, if there is a problem, I know where I can turn for some great advise and assistance...

I actually have a nording that I never smoke. It was my first real pipe and it's a cool looking full bent rusticated. However, I've never really considered it to be that good of a smoker so I rarely select it.

What did you end up doing to your pipes Hatter, drill them out? I think mine could benefit from a slightly larger draft hole. Actually now that I take the pipe apart it feels like the stem is what is offering the most resistance.

That is a good question - I have a Viking that does not draw well. If I blow through the (removed) stem, it feels constricted - but a pipe cleaner or bristle cleaner goes through without obstructions. What exactly is "inside" a stem, is it a tube-insert, or is the vulcanite drilled/formed with the air passage? It is a 1/2 bent stem.

The draft hole is also kinda small, question 2 would be how would I widen it if I can figure out how to make the stem airway bigger? Break out the power drill and a 1/2" bit?

Re: Need a pipe recommendation fast!

I drilled a countersink into the hole in the lower end of stem and then drilled out about the lower 1 1/2" to a diameter of 5/32. A pipemaker could have straightened the stem and drilled it all the way through to the mouthpiece but I didn't want to try it. The hole in the briar was already larger than 5/32 so I didn't do anything to it. Also, the heal on a couple were deeper than the airway so I cleaned them up and used Durham's water putty to raise it up to the level where the airway enters the chamber. IMO the heal is the bigger problem of the two because the little bit of time your smoke spends swirling around the bottom causes lots and lots of condensation and no amount of pipe cleaners can fix wet tobacco. I hope that helps you.

I'm seeing it in these pipes and it's kind of unique and exciting to me... I was never into that whole scene, but this pipe is new and unique. "Sexy decay" is kind of the phrase that rings a bell with this stuff. Am I crazy? Or does anyone else see it too?

Maybe it's just me...

I can see the Geiger. I could totally see the alien queen smoking one of these while on break from chasing sigourney weaver.

Thanks, may break out the drill and try. Or may chicken out and live with it
