Need a pipe recommendation fast!

So I shattered my cheap old estate pipe. I was at work, things were very busy, and it went flying off my desk when I turned to deal with a new problem. It was just something to learn on. And it smoked like crap, so it was no big loss. I'm not too heart broken, really. Besides, I've started smoking my homemade project pipe, but it's not totally done yet, but I could use it in a pinch. So I need some recommendations.

The only problem is... I am poor and I'm cheap. I know you pay for quality. Quality is nice. But I can't afford it. I CANNOT go over $50. Seriously. Nothing over fifty. I know, for a few bucks more I could get a..... whatever. I can't do it. Less would be better.

I only like the bent shapes. I would consider meerschaum if it weren't too garish. And before anybody mentions it, yes I already have a few MM pipes on order to tide me over... I'm mostly interested in briar though.

Any recommendations?

Re: Need a pipe recommendation fast!

Ok ok... I can't be that hard-nosed. If there was something OUT OF THIS WORLD crazy awesome, I'd spend a hundred bucks... but I'm not just talking about a fancy name-brand pipe, I'm talking about a true piece of artistry. And those aren't usually sold for a hundred bucks, I realize that, but that's what I'd spend, because that's what I could afford for a pipe that spoke to my soul.

Re: Need a pipe recommendation fast!

I know you said bent, but this is the only savinelli natural Frenchy has in stock right now it looks like. I just bought the #6 from him the other day and thus far I LOVE IT!!

Frenchy is great to deal with from my experience. I'd say give him a call or email (or PM, i think he's on here somewhere) and see if he's going to get any more bents in--go back a page and you can see the others he had.

Funny you mention frenchy's. I'm looking at them right now.

Most attractive one I've found so far is Stanwell Golden Danish #85.

Re: Need a pipe recommendation fast!

Ok.. so it's more than I wanted to spend, but....

I found a pipe that speaks to my heart..... I didn't think I'd find one like that for $200, let alone $100, let alone $75. I'm not a fan of the rusticated look, but this one, with just the hints of polished briar, really jumped out at me...

I also picked up this Kaywoodie for $22. I suppose I could have gotten a Grabow for about the same money, and I can't say I'm enthused by the look, it looks like a really cheap knock off of the Nording, but the price was good and I like buying the odder names....

And of course, I picked up a couple of MM's and a tin of Squadron Leader...

I also came *THIS* close to picking up a Nording Prince (shown below), but didn't want to spend that much on two pipes:

I'll tell you, Nording has a story that really strikes a chord with me, and some of his $40-$75 pipes really look beautiful.

IMHO, the grain on the Nordings are superior to the bigger name brands in this price range. I looked at Savinellis and Petersons, they were okay, but the pictures of the Nordings always showed a lot more grain for the buck... just a (biased) observation...

Re: Need a pipe recommendation fast!

I'm about to go to bed, but I have to ask, why don't people love Nordings? The price is really right on them. And jeebus! Have you seen some of them??!!! If they smoke halfway decent, then in the lower price range, they kick the butt of anything else... at least in appearance.

I hope mine is a good smoker...

Now.... let me ask... I'm 30. Growing up, most of my friends were into Industrial music and stuff like that. A number of them were Geiger freaks. Is it just me, or does this pipe have a bit of "Geiger" in it? You know, the bio-mechanical, mixed with organic?

I'm seeing it in these pipes and it's kind of unique and exciting to me... I was never into that whole scene, but this pipe is new and unique. "Sexy decay" is kind of the phrase that rings a bell with this stuff. Am I crazy? Or does anyone else see it too?

Maybe it's just me...

I hope you get a good smoker as well. In my experience, 2 of the 3 Nordings I owned had technical problems. One, the draft hole was drilled way off. The other whistled "Dixie" every smoke. I now know I could've easily fixed the whistle problem but to a new smoker, it was frustrating to say the least.
Good luck with your recent acquistions
