Where's the cake....?

Okay, sorry for the newbie question I'm about to post, but how long does it take to form a nice cake? I bought a churchwarden estate pipe that already had a cake established but it was missing in places so I reamed it all out to start over. The pipe gets pretty hot and gurgles (sounds like a bong) and try as I may I can't seem to get the cake to reestablish. Is there a tried and true procedure for this? Do some baccys lend themselves better to making the cake? Did I screw up by reaming out the old?

Re: Where's the cake....?

There are several ways to build a faster cake, but you'll have to find the one that suits you. Some people coat the bowl with honey, jam or spit before smoking. Afterwards you can powder it with ash, corn starch or powdered sugar. Other people smoke 1/4 bowls, 1/2 bowls, etc. The tar escaping the tobacco in the smoke lays a sticky layer of tar that acts as a good (IMO the best) basis for cake, regardless of whether you powder it or not. If your cake gets uneven you can just patch it it rather than reaming it down to the wood, but being an estate your pipe may have needed reamed anyway, so don't kick yourself.

Also you might search this forum for previous Q&A on cake

Re: Where's the cake....?

For the gurgles, let the tobacco dry out a little more before you pack. Smoke slower.

For the cake, just smoke. It'll grow, don't worry. It will take time. I'm still a n00b in every since for the most part, and just now getting some decent cake on my favorite pipe. Most of the others, not really. Best thing to do is not even worry about it, and it'll be there before you even know it.
Now, reading on here, i've seen that burley tobaccos do form cake faster, but only smoke the same tobaccos in the same pipe (ie aromatics in one pipe, englishes in another, etc). With burley though in my experience, I get more goop than anything else in the pipe.
PS, check out the sticky and you'll probably find a lot more information there.

Thanks uncballzer. Hey, it's a shame our Tarheels got whipped so bad by Kansas. I was born and raised in the Old North State and remember fondly watching Jordan and Worthy play the game "back in the day".

Re: Where's the cake....?

I've had great results with just letting it go slowly but surely, making sure I always smoke my bowls all the way down and then just giving the pipe a little shake with my hand over the top to let the ash distribute all over the walls. works like a charm.
and yea, I'm more of a Duke fan but it's always good to see a NC team make it, wish UNC could've made it happen

Yeah, I've tried to keep quiet on here, I don't care to get into an argument too much. Hate it had to end.
