A question
After making my own pipe, and some of the discussion that ensued, I have found myself wondering if anybody would be interested in a pipe making kit pass (I am thinking something along the lines of the Moka pot pass in the coffee forums).
I have an extra rotary tool that I would be willing to base a tool kit around (I think, I have to make certain this afternoon ), and I would include the accesories and sand paper needed to make your own pipe (based on using a prebored briar kit like the ones from Pimo). The idea would be that you would order such a kit in advance, and would have 2 weeks with the tool kit. You replace the expendables that you use, then pass it on to the next person. I imagine that the cost of shipping the tool kit around will be less than having to buy all the tools yourself (and you will not be stuck with a bunch of tools if you do not want to do another). If anyone is interested, just chime in and we can see where this goes.

Re: A question
A bit disappointing that there seems to be no interest, but just to give it one more chance, here is what I would include in the kit.
A dremel rotary tool with large and small sanding attachments (with sleeves) and buffing pads/attachment. A coping saw with extra blades. A combination rasp/file. Various sand paper for hand finishing, and some carnauba wax. Stains would be supplied by people in the pass (so you have a pipe that looks the way you want it to). So, any interest? ![]()

Re: A question
I think it's a cool idea.. maybe tweak it a little bit though....
The thing is, if somebody is handy with tools, then odds are they have the tools to do a pipe. OTOH, if they are clueless, then those are the folks that wouldn't have the tools, but this pass wouldn't appeal to them anyway. To take off with your idea and set it in a slightly different direction... Why not do a "group pipe"? Get a block of briar. Person 1 makes large cuts. Person 2 develops the shape. Person 3 finishes the shape. Person 4 and 5 sands it. Person 6 stains it. Person 7 waxes it and finishes it off. At the end, anybody who wants to can chip in $10 for a chance to win the pipe. Take the "proceeds" and send some pipes/tobac/cigars/whatever to the folks in Iraq... |
