Re: I would like to know..
I just did a calculation today...my collection of 30 odd pipes (cobs and all) bought over the past 2 year's cost €1400 - €1500 approx, most were bought with 20-70% off recommended retail price, my 'mid-range pipes' (bought for about €100) do not - in general - smoke any better than my low grades. My silver spigot Pete I paid €75 for retails on http://www.alpascia.com for €310, it smokes too hot. My big ben budget is varnished has a huge draft hole, shit grain, removed metal filter, loads of pits and smokes like a beauty.
I think most of Jess's pipes will smoke like a dream, but I also know it is possible to pay $1500 for any pipe from any great pipe maker and it will not be a good smoker, the chances are small but they are there. Luckily I don't like most of those danish half bent style designs he does so much of. |

Re: I would like to know..
When you buy one of Jess's pipes, the question whether it will be a good smoking pipe or not is moot.
His pipes are stellar smoking instruments. The attention to detail, "engineering", aesthetics are remarkable. I have 4 of his pipes. All are great smokers, beautiful, and special in my collection. They also hold their re-sale value extremely well.... ![]() Another reason why his pipes command top dollar is the fact he has not made any new pipes in quite a while now. |

Re: I would like to know..
i have to agree there IS a noticable difference between a low-mid grade pipe, and a pipe of Chono's caliber. Infact, there is just no comparison.. Id wager that 9 oiut of 10 would pick a Top-teir pipe against a low to mid range pipe in a blind taste test
![]() oddly enough, im not too crazy about chono's style. Ive only seen 1 or 2 of his pipes that i really loved, and they were taken, and their owners were not willing to part with them But as soon as i see one that speaks to me (and is for sale) im sure ill snag it!! Like bruce said, hes not making many pipes anymore, and i fear his days may be numbered. I felt the same way about Cooke.. even though hes still pumping out pipes, the surgery on his wrists must take its toll.. and i see his carrear being shortened by it, at the very least, his output will drop alot in hte coming years, which means even longer waiting lists, and even more expensive.. ahh i digress.. -hyp |
