Bought my First Pound

Just bought my first pound of bulk tobacco the other day and received it yesterday. Even after 10 months of smoking I still hadn't found a bulk that I liked enough to order a whole pound of. The lucky blend was AJ's VaPer from Hearth & Home. I love that stuff!! My original 4 ounces didn't last long. I'm going to jar and cellar 8 ounces and smoke the rest of it. Next month I'll probably get a pound of Louisiana Red from them and do the same thing.

Now if only they would start selling Scottish Cake in bulk!!

Re: Bought my First Pound

Nice purchase. I am still in the phase where I'm trying as many blends as I can before I think about any big buys. I am lucky enough to live 15 minutes from the habana cigar shop so most of the blends I've been trying are from the hearth and home series. I haven't tried AJ's Vaper yet but I bought an ounce of LA red. I really enjoy the flavor but am having a tough time keeping it lit and getting it burn to the bottom. Do you usually dry it out before you smoke it? Do you have any other favorites from the Heath and Home series you would recommend giving a try?

Re: Bought my First Pound

I've been smoking for a year and a thrid, and I still haven't ordered anything over 4oz. I think I'm going to place an order soon (to celebrate my first year of college, or some such other excuse), but I'm still trying around new blends.

I smoke about 25-30 bowls a week (probably 2-2.5 ounces, since I often smoke from cobs), but a pound still seems like a lot, and I can't commit to one blend that much.

That's awesome that you live so close. I live about 40 minutes from smokingpipes.com's store down in Little River, SC. Unfortunately they don't blend their own tobacco there.

As far as Hearth & Home blends, I've had 6 of their blends:
  • Trout Stream (Aro)
  • AJ's VaPer (VaPer)
  • LA Red (VaPer)
  • Marble Kake (Virginia)
  • Anniversary Kake (VaPer)
  • Virginia Spice (VaPer with some cigar leaf)
and I would recommend any of these. With the LA Red, from what I've ordered so far, it does come a bit damp. I usually let it dry out for 30 60 minutes before packing it into the pipe.

Re: Bought my First Pound

I'm a one-blend smoker. But finding that one blend sometimes takes awhile. Be patient and once you find it then yes, ordering by the pound or more is the ultimate in economizing.

Mine is a blend called "Black n Gold" by SuperValue. It's not a gourmet/Name brand, just something I found at a local shop in a big ziplock baggie, but for me it's fantastic. Smooth with ZERO bite and no yucky aftertaste. I smoke it day in and day out and am happy as a lark to the tune of 5 or 6 bowls a day.

I've got a dozen large Mason jars packed full of it...

Re: Bought my First Pound

Wow, I cannot even fathom a pound of one tobacco, that would probably last me a lifetime. As of recently I have pulled out my pipes about once every two weeks, I have about 30+ different blends and a dozen are not open yet. You are dedicated bro!

Anniversary Kake is my favorite blend from H&H.

Re: Bought my First Pound

I've watched your showdown with great interest. AJ's sounds right up my alley. I'll have to give it a try. AJ = my initials.

Oh. I am a VaPer fan as well.
