Drying methods
Is it better to leave the tobacco in the tin to let it dry or do you spread it out on a paper. It seems like it won't dry consistently in the tin. But I was just wondering what are some of your methods. I have brand new tins of:
Haddos delight Squadron Leader Penzance 1792 flake Full virginia flake |

Re: Drying methods
I take a few bowl's worth, rub it out (if it's a flake), and lay it on a sheet of paper for 1-2 hours (depending on how dry you want it/how wet it its). Works fine, and unlike a lampshade, it lets you fine tune how dry you want it (well, you could do it with a lampshade, but its harder when it dries in 5 minutes vs. 2 hours).

Re: Drying methods
I will sometimes actually take a food dehydrator, put a couple bowls in it and dry it out that way for a few minutes. It gets it just about perfect for me. If I dry it out too much, just add it back to the tin and let it soak up some moisture from the other stuff. Works really great on english blends, and VaPers, but some of the burley and really moist aromatics it still takes time to get dried out.

Re: Drying methods
I usually don't need to dry Squadron Leader or Penzance. The flakes I usually dry like you do on a sheet of paper or magazine. I usually do the whole tin, 50g goes fast anyway

Re: Drying methods
If I have enough time, I just leave the tin/jar open and let it air dry. I usually just dry out enough for a bowl on a sheet of paper.

Re: Drying methods
I always fill the bowl up and leave the pipe for an hour before smoking.
Seems to do the trick, although my tobacco isnt too moist anyway. |

Re: Drying methods
I normally rub out a day or two's tabak and leave it on my desk. It might dry a lot or it might dry a little but its already rubbed out when I want a bowl

Re: Drying methods
Because my smoking is fairly erratic and irregular, I prefer to prepare a bowl just before I smoke. I'll often suddenly get the urge for something and so I don't like to wait for the tobacco to dry of its own accord.
I place the tobacco, rubbed out if it's a flake, on a sheet of tissue paper under a my desk lamp, occasionally checking on it to make sure it doesn't dry out too much. Once it reaches the appropriate level of moisture I simply load and smoke. |

Re: Drying methods
I'm new to actually drying mine out. I had a bad habit of just loading the bowl and puffing away. A little planning is proving to be well worth the effort. I put a bowlful on a plate under my desk lamp and give it 30 minutes or so.
I had heard a lot of good things about Haunted Bookshop blend but without drying it I found it to be horrible. Drying is worth the wait.

Re: Drying methods
Like others, I don't smoke but a bowl or two a week - so I dry what I'm going to smoke on a sheet of paper until it "feels right."

Re: Drying methods
I just remove a bowl's worth from the tin and place it on a piece of paper towel on the counter for an hour or so. The humidity level is so high here that it has to be on something absorbent or it won't dry out at all. That seems to do the trick more often than not.

Re: Drying methods
It really depends. If you are going to store it and dry it out, just leave it in the tin. I've had a tin that I bought about 4 months back, and it has been sitting and drying well. The great thing about pipe tobacco is that it is very easy to rehydrate.
